SUBJECT: Replacement of Birthing Beds in Labor and Delivery Department of Contra
Costa Regional Medical Center
SPECIFIC REQUEST(S)OR RECOMMENDATION(S)&BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION
RECOMMENDATION: AUTHORIZE the Purchasing Agent, on behalf of the Health Services
Department, to purchase eight (8) Hill-Rom "Affinity 4" Birthing Beds.
FISCAL IMPACT: Total cost of the Hill-Rom "Affinity 4" Birthing Beds (incl. tax) is $148,525.
This amount is included in the approved 2008/09 Enterprise Fund I budget.
BACKGROUND: Birthing beds are used in the Contra Costa Regional Medical Center Labor
and Delivery Department to make it possible for laboring moms to safely deliver their babies.
These are highly specialized beds and;are essential for this service.
Our current birthing beds are over ten years old. They are continually breaking and by so
doing, represent a serious threat to patient safety as well as to the safety of the Labor and
Delivery Nursing Staff. In addition, these beds are coming out of support soon. When that
happens, parts and service support will become unavailable.
We are asking that eight units be purchased because there are eight birthing rooms on the
unit and the old beds in each of these rooms are in the same substandard condition.
Hill-Rom is the vendor of choice because the entire hospital is standardized to that
manufacturer. Having multiple vendors in house would pose significant training issues to insure
that staff members who float from one unit to another are qualified.to operate the equipment.
