BACKGROUND: Twenty percent of adults—or one in five —will experience a psychiatric episode during their lifetime that is severe enough to require treatment, and many"more have problems that prevent them from enjoying their lives. There should be a concerted effort to fight stigma at all levels, and consumers of all ages and their families should be encouraged to seek help through public or private programs; and Therefore, it would be appropriate for the Board of Supervisors to proclaim October 5-11, 2008 as "Mental Illness Awareness Week" in Contra Costa County, and request the support of County residents and organizations in this effort to increase the awareness of psychiatric disabilities and to promote the understanding that, through proper treatment and rehabilitation, individuals are able to resume productive, satisfying lives.
