SUBJECT: Honoring NAMI Contra Costa on 30th Anniversary
SPECIFIC REQUEST(S)OR RECOMMENDATION(S)&BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION
RECOMMENDATION(S): ADOPT Resolution No. 2008/651 honoring the National Alliance on Mental Illness,
Contra Costa Chapter, on 30th years of serving the mentally ill, as recommended by Supervisor Bonilla.
FISCAL IMPACT: None
BACKGROUND/REASON(S) FOR RECOMMENDATION(S):
The National Alliance on Mentally Illness, Contra Costa (NAMI CC) is a nonprofit, volunteer,
grassroots organization, whose purpose is to:
• Support families of individuals with mental illnesses.
• Educate families and the public about mental illness.
• Advocate for improved treatment and treatment facilities.
• Fight stigma and discrimination.
• Support legislation that helps those with neurobiological brain disorders.
• Improve private and public sector policies.
• Provide more housing with support services.
• Increase outreach to people with mental illnesses and their families.
The Contra Costa affiliate began in 1978 when a group of families met to find ways to improve the
lives of their mentally ill loved ones. Since that time their membership and influence have continued
to grow.
