SUBJECT: PEHAB Board Vacancies
• Member, Margaret Stauffer (East-County, At-Large #2) 1363 Acacia Dr., Pittsburg 94565,
has resigned from PEHAB. Ms. Stauffer has served on PEHAB since 2003. Her increasing
work responsibilities at the Wellness Community have limited her time for additional
activities.
Per approval from the Board of Supervisors, PEHAB would like to declare vacant the East
County At-Large #2 seat held by Ms. Stauffer so that we can begin recruitment to fill this
seat.
• Member Raul Rojas (Immigrant Community) 3200 California St., Berkeley, CA 94703 has
resigned from PEHAB. Mr. Rojas has served on PEHAB since 2005. He has relocated to
Palo Alto and accepted a new work position in that area (resignation notice given in phone
conversation, January, 2008). He will not longer work or reside in Contra Costa County.
Per approval from the Board of Supervisors, PEHAB would like to declare vacant the
Immigrant Community seat held by Mr. Rojas so that we can begin recruitment for a new
member to fill this seat.
• Member Terry Surles (West County, At-Large #1), 1312-A Mallard Dr., Richmond CA 94801,
has resigned from PEHAB. Mr. Surles has served on PEHAB since 2007. He has accepted
a new position that will require extensive travel making it difficult for him to participate in
PEHAB.
Per approval from the Board of Supervisors, PEHAB would like to declare vacant the West
County, At-Large #1 seat held by Mr. Surles so that we can begin recruitment for new
member to fill this seat.

BACKGROUND:
The Public and Environmental Health Advisory Board (PEHAB) is a 19-member board
appointed by the Board of Supervisors in 1986 to advise the Health Services Department
on community needs. This community-oriented Board seeks diverse representation from
throughout Contra Costa County, and includes community members in the following
representative categories: seniors, children/schools, business/industry, environmental
organizations, labor and consumers. We also have professionals representing local
voluntary agencies, the medical provider community, and immigrant populations. These
representatives provide broad community knowledge and a wealth of experience and
expertise in the health field.
SUBJECT: PEHAB Board Vacancies
PEHAB's mission is to identify community health needs and to make recommendations
to the Health Services Department on how to address these needs. In order to accomplish this,
PEHAB strives to anticipate emerging public health issues and advocates for policies, services,
and programs that will improve the community's health.
PEHAB recruits new members by sending out press releases to local media and notices
to community-based organizations, other coalitions and groups, and members of the Board of
Supervisors. PEHAB members also recommend candidates. PEHAB is committed to diversity
in its membership and residents of Contra Costa with a broad range of community and health
backgrounds are encouraged to apply. Candidates are asked to submit a written application. A
recruitment committee made up of current PEHAB members, with the PEHAB executive
assistant, reviews the applications and interviews potential candidates. The recruitment
committee makes recommendations to the PEHAB Steering Committee of the candidates whose
background, experience and interest best match the vacant seats on the Board. Upon approval
by the Steering Committee, these candidates are contacted and invited to attend a Board
meeting. PEHAB members then vote to approve forwarding these candidate's names and
information to the Board of Supervisors via the Internal Operations Committee for appointment
to PEHAB.
