SPECIFIC REQUEST (S) OR RECOMMENDATION (S) & BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION RECOMMENDATION Acknowledge and honor the significant contributions and ongoing support provided by the Dean and Margaret Lesher Foundation to library service in Contra Costa County. FINANCIAL IMPACT No net County costs. BACKGROUND The Dean and Margaret Lesher Foundation is a generous contributor and partner in providing library and literacy services in Contra Costa County. Their financial support is helping to build strong community libraries and establish library service where it did not previously exist. Donations to Community Library Capital Campaigns The Dean and Margaret Lesher Foundation's early and generous contributions to local Friends of the Library and Library Foundations' capital campaigns provided an incentive for other donors to contribute to the fund-raising efforts. These donations include: • $750,000 to the Friends of the Orinda Library • $500,000 to the Lafayette Community Foundation • $1,000,000 to the Walnut Creek Library Foundation Funding for Libraries at Juvenile Hall and Orin Allen Youth Rehabilitation Facility Committed to bringing services to the underserved,the Dean and Margaret Lesher Foundation donated$100,000 to the Contra Costa County Library to open the Betty Frandsen Library at the John A. Davis Juvenile Hall in 2006. Based on the outstanding success of this effort,they recently donated$70,000 to open another library at the Orin Allen Youth Rehabilitation Facility(OAYRF) in Byron. This library is scheduled to open in June 2008. Support for Project Second Chance, Adult Literacy Program The Dean and Margaret Lesher Foundation has provided ongoing support for Project Second Chance, the library's adult literacy program, since 1986 when Margaret Lesher helped to form the nonprofit Board,PSC, Inc. With additional donations to help break the cycle of illiteracy,the Dean and Margaret Lesher Foundation has provided funding to help adult literacy students build small,home libraries of books that they learn to read to their children. In a continuing effort to educate the community about the importance of this library service,the Dean and Margaret Lesher Foundation invited Project Second Chance to be a guest program at its highly acclaimed Newsmaker Series.
