SUBJECT: ACCEPT THE REPORT BY THE EAST COUNTY AIDS TASK FORCE MEMBERS
SPECIFIC REQUEST(S)OR RECOMMENDATION(S)&BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION
RECOMMENDATION(S):
ACCEPT the report by East County AIDS Task Force members.
BACKGROUND:
Approximately 2,600 Contra Costa residents have been diagnosed with AIDS since the disease was first reported more
than 20 years ago. More than 1020 individuals are now living with AIDS in Contra Costa, and another 766 people have
been reported with HIV since July 2002.
HIV and AIDS disproportionately impacts communities of color, particularly African Americans. Richmond,San Pablo and
Pittsburg have the highest cumulative incidence rates of AIDS in Contra Costa. To support the development of an
appropriate prevention response to HIV and AIDS in our community, Supervisor Glover and Frances Greene of Pittsburg
Preschool Community Council convened the East County AIDS Task Force in 2003.
The East County AIDS Task Force is comprised of a variety of concerned community members, service providers and
community leaders who meet monthly to review HIV data, share health education information, present and discuss
community HIV problems or concerns, and plan community awareness activities. The Task Force has sponsored World
AIDS Day activities on December 1, participated in Fit Fest offering HIV testing and hosting health education activities
during Contra Costa's AIDS Awareness Month in May.
Areas of focus include increasing awareness and access to HIV testing services and reducing stigma and misinformation
through providing prevention and education services to community members. The Task Force works closely with
community-based agencies,faith-based agencies, community leaders, and others to identify opportunities for raising HIV
awareness and access to services.
Task Force Accomplishmerits include:
A resource and information fair at the Pittsburg Health Center.
World AIDS Day candlelight vigil.
Reaffirmation of the task force mission to increase community awareness for all residents by promoting
prevention education, providing advocacy for people impacted by the disease and by encouraging HIV testing.
