SUBJECT: Approval of Contract#26-553-2 with California Nurses Foundation
SPECIFIC REQUEST(S)OR RECOMMENDATION(S)&BACKGROUND JUSTIFICATION
RECOMMENDATION(S):
Approve and authorize the Health Services Director, or his designee, (Jeff Smith, M.D.) to execute on
behalf of the County, Contract#26-553-2 with California Nurses Foundation, a non-profit corporation, in
an amount not to exceed $30,000, to provide consultation and technical assistance with regard to the
Nurse Mentor and Nurse Preceptor Program at Contra Costa Regional Medical Center and Contra Costa
Health Centers, for the period from January 1, 2008 through December 31, 2008.
FISCAL IMPACT:
This Contract is funded 100% by Enterprise I Funds. Cost to the County depends upon utilization. As
appropriate,patients and/or third party payors will be billed for services.
BACKGROUND/REASON(S) FOR RECOMMENDATIONS:
The goal of the Nurse Mentor and Nurse Preceptor Program at Contra Costa Regional Medical Center
and Contra Costa Health Centers is to improve job satisfaction, training retention and patient care skills
especially for newly-licensed nurses who are entering the Hospital setting for the first time and for nurses
who are transitioning into high-stress or intensely complex units, such as Intensive Care, Emergency or
Cardiac Units.
In February 2007, the County Administrator approved and the Purchasing Services Manager executed
Contract #26-553-1 with California Nurses Foundation to provide technical assistance with regard to
implementation of the Nurse Mentor and Nurse Preceptor Program including, but not limited to,
developing focus groups for nurses, nursing assistants, educators and managers, providing training,
support services and data analysis and preparing written reports and project recommendations, for the
period from January 1, 2007 through December 31,2007.
Approval of Contract #26-553-2 will allow the Contractor to continue to provide services, through
December 31, 2008.
