HomeMy WebLinkAboutMINUTES - 10162007 - PR.2 Contra TO: BOARD OF SUPERVISORS 0i 5 Costa FROM: FISH AND WILDLIFE COMMITTEE County� - T'9 CUUN'' DATE: October 16, 2007 SUBJECT: PRESENTATION OF A CERTIFICATE OF APPRECIATION TO INDIVIDUAL WHO HAS MADE EXCEPTIONAL CONTRIBUTIONS TO FISH AND WILDLIFE RESOURCES SPECIFIC REQUEST(S) OR RECOMMENDATION(S) & BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION RECOMMENDATIONS PRESENTATION of a Certificate of Appreciation to the Steve Abbors for exceptional contributions to conserving the fish and wildlife resources of Contra Costa County, as recommended by the Fish and Wildlife Committee. FISCAL IMPACT None. REASON FOR RECOMMENDATION/BACKGROUND In 1998, the Fish and Wildlife Committee voted unanimously to recommend that the Board of Supervisors initiate a Fish and Wildlife Committee certificate of appreciation program. The committee believed the program would be a valuable mechanism for expressing appreciation to those who have made substantial contributions to the local environment. They also felt the recognition program could increase community awareness about the importance of protecting and enhancing the County's fish and wildlife resources. The Board of Supervisors approved this recommendation on February 3, 1998 and recognized nineteen individuals as the first recipients of this award. As a long-time member of the Fish and Wildlife Committee, as a dedicated professional who has spent a career protecting natural resources, and as an active citizen and acknowledged expert on natural resources, Mr. Abbors has made strong and lasting contributions to the conservation fish and wildlife in the County. Mr. Abbors served as a member of the County Fish and Wildlife Committee from 1999 and 2007, holding a leadership role for much of his tenure. Mr. Abbors brought valuable expertise on issues such as rangeland management and wild fire, water quality and conservation of rare, threatened and endangered species to the FWC's deliberations on policy recommendations and grant applications, and members and staff came to rely on his opinions. Mr. Abbors also provided an invaluable leadership role for the FWC, moderating public events hosted by the FWC and working to find consensus among committee members. In his professional life, Mr. Abbors has dedicated his career to conserving natural resources in the County and the East Bay, first with the East Bay Regional Park District and subsequently with the East Bay Municipal Utility District as the Manager of Watersheds and Recreation. Responsible for the management of approximately 30,000 acres of spectacular open space and wildlife habitat, Mr. Abbors has capitalized on his knowledge and passion for wildlife conservation to ensure that the valuable resources of these lands will be handed down to future generations. Mr. Abbors' contributions also extend to his personal time, including countless hours of volunteer work on conservation and entire family vacations happily spent studying rare species. Mr. Abbors has been and will remain a source of knowledge and inspiration for those in the County who care about conservation.
