None.
REASON FOR RECOMMENDATION/BACKGROUND
In 1998, the Fish and Wildlife Committee voted unanimously to recommend that the Board of Supervisors initiate
a Fish and Wildlife Committee certificate of appreciation program. The committee believed the program would
be a valuable mechanism for expressing appreciation to those who have made substantial contributions to the
local environment. They also felt the recognition program could increase community awareness about the
importance of protecting and enhancing the County's fish and wildlife resources. The Board of Supervisors
approved this recommendation on February 3, 1998 and recognized nineteen individuals as the first recipients of
this award. The award has been presented several times since then to a number of worthy recipients.

On June 20, 2007, the Fish and Wildlife Committee (FWC) voted unanimously to
recommend this award be presented to Steve Abbors for exceptional contributions to the
protection and conservation of fish and wildlife in the County.
As a long-time member of the Fish and Wildlife Committee, as a dedicated professional
who has spent a career protecting natural resources, and as an active citizen and
acknowledged expert on natural resources, Mr. Abbors has made strong and lasting
contributions to the conservation fish and wildlife in the County. Mr. Abbors served as a
member of the County Fish and Wildlife Committee from 1999 and 2007, holding a
leadership role for much of his tenure. Mr. Abbors brought valuable expertise on issues
such as rangeland management and wild fire, water quality and conservation of rare,
threatened and endangered species to the FWC's deliberations on policy
recommendations and grant applications, and members and staff came to rely on his
opinions. Mr. Abbors also provided an invaluable leadership role for the FWC,
moderating public events hosted by the FWC and working to find consensus among
committee members. In his professional life, Mr. Abbors has dedicated his career to
conserving natural resources in the County and the East Bay, first with the East Bay
Regional Park District and subsequently with the East Bay Municipal Utility District as
the Manager of Watersheds and Recreation. Responsible for the management of
approximately 30,000 acres of spectacular open space and wildlife habitat, Mr. Abbors
has capitalized on his knowledge and passion for wildlife conservation to ensure that the
valuable resources of these lands will be handed down to future generations. Mr.
Abbors' contributions also extend to his personal time, including countless hours of
volunteer work on conservation and entire family vacations happily spent studying rare
species. Mr. Abbors has been and will remain a source of knowledge and inspiration for
those in the County who care about conservation.
