RECOMMENDATION:
ACCEPT the report from Contra Costa Health Services Homeless Program on the outcomes
and lessons learned from the Project Homeless Connect event held December 7, 2006 in
Richmond.

BACKGROUND:
On November 14, 2006 a resolution was unanimously passed by the Board of Supervisors
encouraging all citizens to consider volunteering their time or donating to Contra Costa's first

THE HEALTH SERVICES DEPARTMENT

Project Homeless Connect held December 7, 2006 at the Richmond Civic Auditorium in
Richmond.
The purpose of Project Homeless Connect was to connect homeless persons in Contra Costa
County with vital services. Services offered included assistance with applications for medical
and dental care; employment services and shelter placement; mental health and alcohol and
other drugs counseling and referral; legal assistance and referral; massage, pet care; and
community homeless court. Additionally, breakfast and lunch was served, winter coats were
given away, and translators were readily available if required.
The event was sponsored by Contra Costa County Health Services Department, Homeless
Services Program. Services were provided by volunteers, non-profit organizations, corporations,
faith based organizations, homeless services providers, housing providers, and government
agencies.

Consumer evaluations received: 37
An overwhelming number of consumers felt their first Project Homeless
Connect experience was positive with many reporting how moved they were
by the kindness and support of the volunteers. The most important services
that people received that day included dental services, shelter/housing
services, homeless court, food, and winter coats. The services they'd like to
have at the next event include vision care and haircuts.
