HomeMy WebLinkAboutMINUTES - 01162007 - C.7 (e42 IN THE MATTER OF RESOLUTION NO. 2007/21 RECOGNIZING THE EXTENSIVE PUBLIC SER VICE OF RETIRED RICHMOND MAYOR IRMA ANDERSON Whereas, Irma Anderson received her R.N. and B.S.N. from Cornell University, and her Masters of Public Health from the University of California, Berkeley, School of Public Health;and Whereas, Irma Anderson has served the Contra Costa community as Director of Public Health Nursing, an advocate, a public official, and a citizen for over 50 years; and Whereas, Irma Anderson was the first African-American woman elected to the Richmond City Council when she received the highest number of votes in her City Council election in November 1993 and served on the City Council until December 2001;and Whereas, Irma Anderson was the first African-American woman elected as Mayor of Richmond and the first African-American woman electedMayor of a major California city, and served as Richmond's Mayor from December 2001 until January 2007;and Whereas, Irma Anderson also served as Chair of the U.S. Conference of Mayors_Children, Health, and Human Services Committee;Member of the U.S. Conference of Mayors Advisory Board; Metropolitan Transportation Commissioner;Vice-Chair of the Contra Costa Transportation Authority; and Board Chair of the Richmond YMCA, and was especially committed to children's and health issues;and Whereas, Irma Anderson worked hard to bring a public health approach to violence prevention and helped spearhead a collaborative effort between Richmond, Contra Costa County, and the community to bring a Harlem Children's Zone model to Richmond;and Whereas,Among the many policy initiatives led by Mayor Anderson was her Kids First Initiative,which collaboratively expanded after school opportunities for students and increased investment in youth programs.; NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors does hereby recognize the extensive con tr utions and the service of Mayor Irma Anderson to the residents of Contra Costa County.
