SPECIFIC REQUEST(S)OR RECOMMENDATION(S)&BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION
RECOMMENDATION:
Adopt Position Adjustment Resolution Number 20034 to Establish the classification of Child Support Assistant
(REPRESENTED) and reclassify 14 Clerk Senior Level (REPRESENTED) positions and 37 Clerk Experienced
Level (REPRESENTED) positions to the new class in the Department of Child Support Services.
FISCAL IMPACT:
The annual cost of this action is $27,341 and 100% funded by state and federal sources.
BACKGROUND:
Human Resources staff has studied the clerical positions in the Department of Child Support Services (DCSS)
and found the clerical jobs have evolved from general clerical work in nature to more specialized tasks
performed in support of the Child Support Specialists.
Additionally, staff has conducted a study of Child. Support departments in California counties and found that
the clerical positions have evolved and are classified as Child Support Assistants. The classification of Child
Support Assistant is utilized by Alameda, Butte, Kings, Merced, Monterey, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino,
Shasta, and Siskiyou counties.
The Child Support Assistant class will establish a career ladder to the Child Support Specialist class in DCSS.
The Child Support Assistants will perform work in support of the Child Support Specialists to gain knowledge
of basic case management functions and the Child Support Specialists are responsible for the full scope of
child support case management duties.
CONSEQUENCE OF NEGATIVE ACTION:
If this action is not approved, positions within the Department of, Child Support Services will not be
appropriately classified.
