Since mobility does equal independence, particularly for frail seniors, the Advisory Council on Aging, at their June 20, 2007, meeting, recommended the recipients of the Ilene Lubkin Senior Transportation Award for Volunteer of the Year Award and the Transportation Provider of the Year. Both of these awards have been named in honor of the late Ilene Lubkin, whose vision led the Advisory Council on Aging's efforts to improve transportation for seniors in Contra Costa County. Provider of the Year The Central Contra Costa Transit Authority(CCCTA), also known as the County Connection, was nominated for their innovative "Community Connection" Program, which was implemented in 2006. As a way to support the goal of increasing mobility options for seniors and people with disabilities, the Community Connection Program provided four(4) retired LINK paratransit vans to four(4) separate community-based organizations within the County Connection service area. In receiving the vehicles, these organizations were able to either begin or expand transportation services to the senior and/or disabled populations that they service. In return, each organization promised to provide a minimum of fifty(50)trips per month to individuals registered as eligible for ADA paratransit. Each organization was also promised up to $5,000 per year to assist with their vehicle's maintenance, as well as free driver training for up to four(4) drivers per year from County Connection's contractor, Laidlaw. Volunteer of the Year Garry Allison, who volunteers for the City of San Ramon, is one of the dedicated volunteer van drivers at the San Ramon Senior Center as well as a member of the Senior Advisory Committee. Mr. Allison has been a volunteer driver since 2002, logging 2,750 hours. Mr. Allison has taken a leadership role in other aspects of the senior van program, including handling the sign-ins for rides, gathering data from the other drivers for the monthly reporting of usage statistics, and assisting in gathering information for several transportation grants. Mr. Allison is described as"dedicated, patient, sincere, extremely hard-working, caring and empathetic. With his selfless volunteer efforts, he has truly made a difference in the lives of San Ramon's seniors, particularly in the area of transportation.
