SPECIFIC REQUEST(S)OR RECOMMENDATION(S)&BACKGROUND JUSTIFICATION
RECOMMENDATION:
PRESENTATION to adopt Resolution No. 2006/607 announcing Contra Costa County Project Homeless Connect, an
event to connect homeless persons with vital services on December 7, 2006.
FISCAL IMPACT:
Costs borne by participating agencies; $9,000 County funds for venue rental and project expenses
BACKGROUND:
Ari estimated 15,000 people experience homelessness in Contra Costa County each year. On any given night,more
than 4,800 people are homeless. Project Homeless Connect will provide vital services to these people under one roof
in one day. The event will be held at the Richmond Auditorium,403 Civic Center Plaza, Richmond on December 7,
2006. Donations are being accepted and volunteers are being solicited.
Services being offered will include assistance with applications for medical and dental care; eye exams and glasses;
employment services and placement; mental health and alcohol and other drugs counseling and referral; legal
assistance and referral; massage, foot care and pet care; educational classes, and domestic violence counseling and
referral, and other programs and services. Additionally, food will be served and translators will be available.
In addition to connecting the homeless to vital services, the event will educate the community about homelessness and
show how they can participate in ending homelessness in our community. This directly supports the Contra Costa
County Ten Year Plan to End Homelessness.
The event is sponsored by Contra Costa County Health Services Department, Homeless Services Program. Services
will be provided by volunteers,non-profit organizations, corporations, faith based organizations,homeless services
providers, housing providers, and government agencies.
