ADOPT resolution No. 2006/627 proclaiming October 22 — 28, 2006 as Friends and Foundations of the Library
Week in Contra Costa County.
FINANCIAL IMPACT
No financial impact.
BACKGROUND
Friends and Foundations of the Library raise money that enable our community libraries to provide funding for
library programs and special events, support summer reading programs for children, teens and adults, purchase
additional books and materials, and buy much-needed equipment.
The Friends and Foundation members' gift of time and their commitment to the library underscore the fact that
libraries are critical to our communities. Thank you, Contra Costa County Library Friends and Foundations of
the Library members, for your dedication and support!
• Over $300,000 was donated towards the purchase of books and materials, furniture and equipment, and
to provide ongoing programs for children,teens and adults.
47,650 volunteer hours were contributed to sorting donated books, organizing and conducting book
sales, and advocating for the library within their community.
• Nearly 6,000:people belong to Friends and Foundations of the Library groups countywide

Highlights of Friends and Foundations of the Library Activities for 2006:
District 1
Friends of the El Cerrito Library: Supported children's and teen programs with proceeds from their large annual
book sale and provided community outreach at the El Cerrito July 4th Festival.
Friends of the El Sobrante Library: Celebrating twelve years of operation, the Friends-run "Book House," has
significantly increased funding for library materials and children's programs and has improved community
access to good reading materials at book sale prices.
Friends of the Kensington Library: Provided an ongoing art display for over forty years and contributed almost
half of the materials budget for the Kensington Library.
Friends of the San Pablo Library: Held two books sales which funded programs throughout the year, including
summer reading programs; bought book bags for distribution during the summer reading program.
District 2
Friends of the Crockett Library: Published "Crockett Cuisine" cookbook containing recipes from local residents
as a library fundraiser; funded children's programs for community event"Festival on the Strait".
Friends of the Hercules Library: Raised $25,000 for the Hercules Library opening day collection by holding
book sales for the past four years.
Friends of the Lafayette Library: Contributed $750,000 to help launch the campaign for a new library with
proceeds raised by more than forty Friends volunteers who run the BookRoom.
Friends of the Martinez Library: Creating a "reading garden" located behind the Martinez Library for library
patrons to enjoy a good book in a peaceful location.
Friends of the Moraga Library: Increased funding for community programs, purchased all new flat screen
monitors for public work stations,provided a large contribution of funding for the materials budget; contributed
$5000 to the Town of Moraga's--share,of funding additional library hours.
Friends of the Orinda.Library: Celebrating their 50th Anniversary this month, the Friends of the Orinda Library
have provided leadership for broad community support along with time and energy for raising funds for the
Orinda Library and its services.
Friends of the Pinole Library: Purchased "book baskets" for patrons to carry books while browsing in the
library.
Friends of the Rodeo Library: Contributed funding to support library programs at the Rodeo Library.
District 3
Friends of the Brentwood Library: Produced an electronic newsletter that reaches a wider community audience.
Danville Library Foundation: Sponsored the Danville Library's 10`" anniversary celebration in August 2006;
annually sponsor the Danville & San Ramon Libraries'joint CityRead program and Danville Library's National
Volunteer Recognition Week event.
Friends of the Danville Library: Co-sponsored the Danville Library's 10ffi Anniversary Event in August 2006;
raised funds for the Danville Library through the operation of a book store and quarterly book sales and
contribute library programming with their monthly First Wednesday programs.
San Ramon Library Foundation: Spearheaded fundraising for the new Dougherty Station Library and assisted
with Opening Day activities.

District 4
Clayton Community Library Foundation — Sponsored the annual City of Clayton's July 4`h library float to
support the Summer Reading Program.
Concord Friends of the Library: Sponsored author programs for teens and adults and funded several outstanding
children's programs.
Friends of the Pleasant Hill Library: Funded the start of monthly adult programming and increased
programming for children and teens; increased their contributions toward the purchase of library materials.
Project Second Chance, Inc. — Raised awareness of and money for PSC, the library's adult literacy program by
sponsoring "The Bookies" book club event, a Martini Tasting fundraiser, three well-attended Book Talks, a golf
tournament and three 14-hour tutor training events.
District 5
Friends of the Antioch Library: Contributed funds to purchase furniture for the renovation of the Antioch
Library.
Friends of the Bay Point Library: Received a First Five Ready Set Read Community Grant for$3000 to organize
a"Check It Out" event.
Friends of the Oakley Library — Represented the library at community events such as the Almond Festival;
provided prizes and food for children's and teen programs; and, purchased a beautiful rug for the children's
area.
Friends of the Pittsburg Library: Funded a three-part docent-led DeYoung Museum series; put the Pittsburg
Library "on the map" by funding the inclusion of a Contra Costa County Library card on city maps provided by
the Pittsburg Chamber of Commerce.
Districts 2,3 & 4
Friends of the Walnut Creek Library: Mobilized community support for moving forward with a new Walnut
Creek Library; funded books and programs for the City of Walnut Creek's first One City One Book program;
provided strong volunteer support for the Walnut Creek Foundation's public fundraising and library awareness
events.
Friends of the Ygnacio Valley Library: Funded books and programs for City of Walnut Creek's first "One City
One Book" program and provided strong volunteer support for the Walnut Creek Library Foundation's public
fundraising and library awareness event.
Walnut Creek Library Foundation: Raised over $10,000 with "Savor the Summer" and "Walk the Library
Walk" fundraisers; hosted a lecture by and reception for constitutional scholar Akhil Amar, drawing over 250
attendees; and, funded new computer furniture and lounge chairs for Ygnacio Valley Library's teen area.
