HomeMy WebLinkAboutMINUTES - 10242006 - C.25 60 i IN THE MATTER OF HONORING RESOLUTION NO. 2006/656 JOE GOGLIO FOR HIS COMMUNITY SERVICE IN CONTRA COSTA COUNTY WHEREAS,Joe Goglio was born in Macon Georgia in 1945;after his father graduated from the University of Colorado at Boulder,his family moved to Richmond,where Joe began school at Nystrom School and later attended Rancho School and St. Paul's School in San Pablo before relocating to Livermore;in 1956 the family settled in San Jose where Joe lived until entering UC Berkeley in 1963. He worked in canneries during the summer while in college and became a union member for Teamsters Local 679 in San Jose;and WHEREAS,Joe Goglio graduated from college in 1967 and went to work for Building Services International Union,Local 250 (Now UHW-West) in 1968 as a business representative-organizer, serving hospital workers,including those at Brookside Hospital and old Kaiser Hospital.Richmond on Cutting Boulevard.`Vhile with Local 250 he became a delegate to the Contra Costa Central Labor Council" --(Among his fondest early memories is walking precincts in Richmond for Georgel Miller in,a.bid for State Senate and extended delegate meetings adjourned to seminars at Paul's in Martinez�to learn real"government/politics);and WHEREAS,Joe Goglio returned to school in.1971 for graduate:work,but-left to join the=national AFL-CIO Human Resources Development Institute (HRDI)as a transition counselor:for veterans leaving the service. He stayed with HRDI until 1981 as regional representative in San Francisco ancl`then work6dl for the Santa Clara Labor Council as l a training liaison;and; _ .F WHEREAS,Joe Goglio began workuig for the Central Labor Council United Way as"AFL"CIO Cominunity Services -. , Liaison in October 1982,where he still works-.today;and WHEREAS,Joe Goglio has worked with union members and their families to secure benefits from public and private ;.. agencies for needs not covered--by-tlieir union=contracts,such as marriage.,counseluig„domestic abuse,youth substance abuse .financial counseling and more He lias advocatednfor tivorking"."families on behalf of the Labor Council for better response."to'corfi'munity needs such as homelessness and childcare With unions he has orgznized;;support for,fa mily members^of striking.unions"arid those affected by plant closures 'He has represented the Libor Council on a wide array of communityplanning and advisory boards,induding Contra Costa Human Services"Advisory Commission which he chaired,"and WHEREAS,Joe Goglio during his tune with the Central Labor Council arid'Uruted Way,Ilas enlgyed the planning and leading of informational=tours for visiting foreign trade unro.n&representatives andrlocal government officials, coaching them in advocating for services in the political ar6na�Ih..the"1980s he traveled''abroad to New Zealand to � ,. represent U.S. unions in"a similar exchange;and WHEREAS,Joe Goglio's entire`career'in"organized"labor.l7as.been devoted=not only to the service of union members and their families, but also to liis community and its:neediest individuals: He has worked tirelessly to increase d7e support of union members for esseritial.,services through support for worksite charity campaigns. He has advocated the necessity of unions being involved a the planning and execution of these efforts; NOW,THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED that the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors hereby honors Joe Goglio for his outstanding career of service to me b rs of or anized labor and to all the people of Contra Costa County.
