BOARD OF SUPERVISORS Contra FROM: William B. Walker, M.D., Director Costa o- 7z s Contra Costa Health Services Countyo sr S DATE: October 17, 2006 COU SUBJECT: Resolution recognizing Lead Poisoning Prevention Week(October 22 through 28,2006) in Contra Costa County. SPECIFIC REQUEST(S)OR RECOMMENDATION(S)&BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION Recommendation: Adopt Resolution 2006/608 recognizing Lead Poisoning Prevention Week (October 22 through 28, 2006) in Contra Costa County as recommended by Contra Costa Health Services' Lead Poisoning Prevention Project. Background: Exposure to lead can cause cognitive and behavior problems, delayed growth, and other health problems, especially for young children. Children continue to be poisoned by lead in deteriorated lead-based paint in older housing, and by lead in a wide variety of consumer products and other sources. Over 810 Contra Costa children with elevated lead levels have received services from the Lead Poisoning Prevention Project. Many more County residents have been taught about how to prevent lead poisoning and the importance of having children tested for lead. To support the goal of having all of our children grow up healthy and lead-free, the Contra Costa Lead Poisoning Prevention Project recommends to the Board of Supervisors that Lead Poisoning Prevention Week, October 22 through 28, 2006 be recognized in Contra Costa County.
