DATE: October 3, 2006 County
SUBJECT: Contract with Cheryl Gould to Provide Training for Library Staff for the
Period October I, 2006 through April 30, 2007.
SPECIFIC REQUEST (S) OR RECOMMENDATION (S) & BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION
RECOMMENDATION
APPROVE and AUTHORIZE the County Librarian, or designee, to execute a contract with Cheryl Gould in an
amount not to exceed $31,700 to provide training for Library Staff for the period October 1, 2006 through
April 30, 2007.
FINANCIAL IMPACT
The total cost, not to exceed$31,700, is included in the Library's 2006-2007 budget.
BACKGROUND
One of the major findings of the Library's recent Strategic Plan was that ease of use of the library and its
resources is a top priority for County residents. They want to explore the library's offerings on their own, using
tools and services that are simple on the surface, with more depth/complexity available, if desired. The public
expects Library Staff to possess excellent knowledge of where information can be found and to provide reliable
recommendations, shortcuts, and timesavers to highlight desirable resources and make the library easy to
navigate.
Additional Staff training based on the InfoPeople workshop "Helping the Public Use Public Access Computers"
will ensure that Staff is able to demonstrate and offer superior technology problem-solving skills. The Library
now desires to enter into a contract with Cheryl Gould who will provide 20 one-day sessions to train permanent
and substitute Library Staff to accomplish the following:
• Increase existing Staff skills in computer competency to support the public in their effort to access
information on the Library's personal computers;
• Teach Staff troubleshooting and teaching techniques helpful in working the Library's customers who use the
Library's personal computers;
• Enhance Staff time efficiency as Staff's time is utilized more effectively due to increased personal computer
use to assist library customers navigate electronic resources;
• Move the Library towards its goal of 80/20 self-service for reference assistance;
• Offer more computer classes to the public utilizing Library resources because Staff will be better trained;
and
• Strengthen and expand the Library's existing peer training program
