County Counsel concluded in December that I, as a Supervisor's Chief of Staff,would have a personal interest in continued employment with the Supervisor that may appear to influence my actions as an ALUC Commissioner representing the County. To avoid the possible appearance of a conflict of interest, County Counsel suggested that I could resign my position as an ALUC Commissioner. As I do not wish to create the appearance of a conflict of interest, or cause any problems for the ALUC Commission, I have decided to resign my position as an ALUC Commissioner as of January 6,2006. I am sorry that 1 am unable to serve as an ALUC Commissioner through the end of my term of appointment. It was an experience of civic engagement that I very much enjoyed and viewed as a service to the community that has given so much to me over the years. BACKGROUND Dr. Rihn was appointed by the Director of Airports to the Airport Land Use Commission in March of 2003. Dr. Rihn has submitted a letter of resignation for health reasons. Mr. Arnold Peterson was appointed by the Director of Airports to the Airport Land Use Commission in May of 2003 and has submitted a letter of resignation due to relocation outside of Contra Costa County. I had hoped that I could hold on awhile longer to allow a more orderly transition. However, multiple surgeries and proposed radiation therapy indicate that I am entirely too preoccupied with day to day living and survival to be able to be of much benefit to the Commission. Therefore I must make room for a replacement. I have.discussed this with the DirectorofAirports , Keith Fr-eitas. He will replace me with a much better qualified and healthier commissioner.
