RECOMMENDATION
AUTHORIZE the Contra Costa County Librarian to apply for and accept $2,500.00 from Nextbook and the American
Library Association,Let's Talk About It: Jewish Literature Grant Program for the period ending June 30, 2008. (District I)

BACKGROUND
Description of Service
The Let's Talk About It: Jewish Literature grant provides $2,500.00 for five book discussions at the Kensington Library.
These discussions, led by Dr. Naomi Seidman of the Graduate Theological Union, were very successful the first time the
Kensington Library was awarded this grant, in 2006. The $2,500 would cover the cost of honoraria for Dr. Seidman
($1,500.00)and approximately 20 copies each of the five books($1,000.00).

Created as a locus for Jewish literature, culture, and ideas, Nextbook promotes books illuminating 3,000 years of Jewish
civilization. Its programs include: partnerships with public libraries and other organizations to create innovative public
programs; the Jewish Encounters book series in which prominent authors consider notable individuals, issues, or events in
Jewish history; and Nextbook.org, a website featuring a daily cultural news digest, original features, and an annotated list
of recommended books.Nextbook was established to be a gateway to Jewish literature, culture,and ideas for Jews and non-
