We produced this event with no financial assistance from Contra Costa County and without staff support. The Tracy Fraas District III commissioners believed that this event was important enough to women and girls in Contra Costa County that the extra time and effort by all Tracey Loveridge commissioners to plan and hold this event was more than worth it. We District IV received many accolades from the women that were honored, the general Lanette Clarke public and from local and state representatives. Obesity in Denise Schmidt children and adults is one of the biggest health issues being discussed on the Charlotte Standefer local and national level. Changes in diet and an increase in exercise are the most effective way to combat this issue. Attendance/Representation: We currently have fourteen members out of a potential twenty-five member board. We generally have enough commissioners attend each meeting to have a quorum. We face many challenges in recruitment of members. One of our dilemmas is that we have limited financial means to pay for ads in the local newspapers to recruit new members. We have tried to obtain free advertising in the Contra Costa Times, and while they say they will print our recruitment ads,we have not seen an ad to date. We plan to pay for advertising in January 2007 from funds raised from the Hall of Fame. Additionally,we have requested assistance from the Board of Supervisors in recruiting at-large members, with no response. Indeed, it has been challenging to get the Board of Supervisors to fill their own district seats. Two district representatives were recently appointed after two year vacancies in their respective districts: (Districts II and III). A representative for District I continues to be vacant and has also been vacant for two years. The Contra Costa Commission for Women is committed to working with the Board of Supervisors in 2007 for the betterment of women and girls in Contra Costa County. Trainins/Certification: We have not received any training or certification. We have just recently learned that training is available once a year sponsored by the County. We hope to be offered the opportunity to attend. In the past, when we had a budget from the County,we attended Women's conferences sponsored by other commissions and the State. Goals 2007• 1) We are in the planning stages of sponsoring an event to show the movie "Darfur Diaries" in early 2007. 2) We are planning on working with an intern to develop a survey of the needs of Women in Contra Costa County and will report the results back to the Board of Supervisors. 3) We will begin planning for the Hall of Fame scheduled for March 2008.
