BACKGROUND: i On June 18. 2002. the Board of Supervisors adopted Resolution No. 2002/377. which requires that each regular and ongoing board. commission. or committee shall annually report to the Board of Supervisors on its activities. accomplishments. membership attendance. required training/certification (if any). and proposed work plan or objectives for the following year, on the second Tuesday in December. This was the first time AC5 presented local wines at an event, and it was extremely well received by attendees. • We are still using funds from a previous 510.000 grant from the National Endowment for the arts to i upgrade our communications tools and services. • In November.the California Arts Council informed AC5 that it xyill revive its State Local l Partnership Program that has been dormant for several year due to state budget constraints. AC- will be submitting an application. When AC5 was formed in 1994. it received funding under the i partnership program—funding that was matched by Contra Costa County. Since the program became dormant in"_'003. ACS has relied wholly on funds from the count}. Fundraising: For the second tear. AC5 collaborated«-itis the Sherif[RupY s Posse in an event that raised funds for the commission. Member of the Posse.their friends and the public attended a performance of Diablo Light Opera Company's-Aly Fair Lad%- in March. Prior to the shoo. guests attended a pizza part at a restaurant near the performance venue.the Dean Lesher Regional Center for the Arts in Walnut Creek. Mary attendees also viewed the photograph,, show. "The Kennedy Year"at the Bedford Gallery. which was included in the admission. i Awards: This marked the 11 year that AC has presented awards to individuals and organizations whose � meritorious work in the arts and culture have had a significant impact on the quality of life in Contra Costa I County. The awards ceremon}-,vas held in October at the El Campanil Theatre in Antioch: it was the first ' year that EI Campanil donated use of its theater. Six individuals received awards. The ceremony is videotaped and telecast throughout the year on CCTV. In addition.the Contra Costa Times continued its support b,, devoting the entire front page of its Sunday Arts and Entertainment section to a large four-color photo of the honorees. additional inside pages carried profiles and photos of each honoree. The event was made possible in part by a 53.000 grant from Wells Fargo Bank. I Symposium: AC5 is the only institution in the county that arranges symposia on arts issues and support i sen ices. The fist ryas in 1996. In earl _00 AC5 will be co-sponsoring a symposium on arts funding with the California Lawxers for the Arts. This symposium will be videotaped for distribution throughout California. In the spring of 2_006.the California La-,x vers for the arts held the"Symposium on California Arts and Heafhv Communities` in Los Anaeles: AC-5 sponsored its airing on CCTV. bringing its excellent content to Contra Costa Count-residents. Student Arts Scholars: On Max-31. AC5 again hosted a ceremony and reception for talented and gifted Contra Costa Count-students who were selected for an intensive professional training program at the California Summer School for the Arts in Valencia. The event was held in the chambers of the Board of Supervisors, featuring performances by the students. It was telecast several times on CCTV. This was the ; second year that the event ryas not funded by the State due to budget constraints:hoxyeyer AC5 continues to i honor these students as a way of emphasizing the importance of the arts and celebrating the.health of talent that exists in our county. ACE 2006 knu;al Reoort Page? ! I i Programs: i Teachers Mural Painting Workshop: A primary mission of AC' is to strengthen arts education in Contra Costa County. Commission Chair Harold Beaulieu is forwarding that goal by coordinating Teachers Mural i Painting\N"orkshops throughout the count}. The workshops demonstrate that murals can be potent teaching tools. giving young people an outlet to express themselves and tapping creative energies that might otherwise be used in inappropriate sayS. The Teacher Mural Painting Workshop is a one day hands on workshop designed to promote mural paining i in elementarx and middle schools b- exposing teachers to the basic materials and techniques of large scale painting. Five workshops dere held during 2006. Art Passages: In December 2200'). ACS inaugurated Arts Passages. an ongoing series of art exhibits in the I Count-,-administration Building at 651 Pine Street. Martinez. During 2006.three exhibitions were mounted: January—April: "East Count-artists`. a gathering of local artists that are associated with The Arts Cultural Foundation of Antioch(ACFA)through the Lsnn House Gallen or other visual art programs. Artists represented stere from Antioch. Pittsburg. Bas-Point,Discovery Bas-. and Oakley. May—September: "Contra Costa Count-Colleges Art Faculty Invitational Exhibit''. corks be 13 faculty members from four Contra Costa Count colleges. September—December: "ArtsChange: Almost a Decade". ArtsChange. a group of visual artists, nurses. doctor and other frontline staff at the Richmond Health Center_ has produced a range of incredible works dealing with topics such as violence prevention, identity. the art of healing. food and movement. This exhibit featured more than 60 pieces produced by ArtsChange over the past decade. Contra Costa Count-Is Public Service: The Arts and Culture Commission of Contra Costa Count(AC-5) has partnered with General Services Print&Mail on the"Contra Costa Count Is Public Service"project I initiated by Count Administrator John Cullen. The project places large graphic wall displa-,s in public areas of count buildings featuring photos of employees doing jobs that are essential to the public. These displays. also featuring the Count-Sea]. seek to comes-to both count citizens and count employceS that Contra I Costa Count-is a great place to lis e and work because the count provides those services that assure comfort j and safety. During the summer of 2006.the concept was developed. and it was then presented to all department heads at their September meeting. The prototype is planned for the lobby area of the I I floor of the Administration Building. to coordinate with its remodel. Special Art Program: AC-5 remains an active partner with Art in the Courthouse Committee. During 2006. AC5 commissioners and staff assisted the committee with identifying artwork for changing exhibitions in the Spinetta Family Las-Center and the Richmond Courthouse. and with finding advisor to-cork with them on the purchase of a public art piece for the Spinetta building. The Richmond Courthouse sax its first ever art show. photographs from the "Kids at Art`-project. spearheaded by AC5 chair Harold Beaulieu. Communications: I I ■ i1 eb site: During 2006.the commission's NC"eb site was revamped to include more information that i is more timely and relevant to constituents and of general interest to the public.
