We the People Bookshelf on the Pursuit of Happiness Grant Program for the period ending May 31,2005. (District II) ' FINANCI_AL IMPACT No matehina funds are required. i BACKGROUND I Description of Service The We the People Bookshelf Grant provides fifteen classic hardcover books in English for young readers, four books in Spanish. a CD with traditional music, and promotional material for the Lafayette Library. These books will encourage young people to read classic books and explore themes in American history, culture, and ideas that embody the theme of the"Pursuit of Happiness`. i More about The National Endowment for the Humanities and the American Library association Because democracy demands wisdom, the National Endowment for the Humanities serves and strengthens our Republic by � promoting excellence in the humanities and conveying the lessons of history to all Americans. The Endowment accomplishes this mission by providing grants for high-quality humanities projects in four funding areas: preserving and j providing access to cultural resources, education, research, and public programs. NE grants typically go to cultural institutions. such as museums, archives, libraries. colleges, universities, public i tele-%ision and radio stations, and to individual scholars. The grants strengthen teaching and leamine in the humanities in schools and colleges across the nation; facilitate research and original scholarship; provide opportunities for lifelong learning; and preserve and provide access to cultural and educational resources.
