PEOPLE WHO CARE AWARD
Recipients Chosen by the
Contra Costa County Homeless Continuum of Care Board
Trophies Presented at the November 1, 2005, Meeting of the
Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors
651 Pine Street, Martinez
The Two Recipients of the "People Who Care" Awards will be:
Emergency Family Shelter Task Force. The Emergency Family Shelter Task Force
was formed by thirteen community leaders on July 14, 2004,to "develop a strategy to
keep the family shelters open for the next two years." The focus of the Task Force is to
ensure that funds are raised to keep the family shelters open through June 2006. The
First 5 Families and Children Commission of Contra Costa County provided challenge
grants for funds raised by the Task Force. The Emergency Family Shelter Task Force is
being honored for its efforts to keep the Mt. View and North Concord Family Shelters
open from October 1, 2004,to the present, and for the $700,000 that was raised to keep
the shelters open through June 2005, and the current campaign to raise$700,000 to
extend the life of the two family shelters to the end of June,2006. We honor the Task
Force leadership and the hundreds of volunteers and donors as PEOPLE WHO CARE.
Students at Stanley Middle School. The sixth, seventh, and eight graders at Stanley
Middle School through their GRO (Global Relief Outreach)Program decided they
wanted to help homeless children and families in Contra Costa County--especially the
family shelters run by SHELTER INC. They organized aWalk-A-Thon which earned
$8,700.00 for the two family shelters. They subsequently earned another$3,500.00 for
the families that became homeless due to Hurricane Katrina. For their awareness of
homelessness in Contra Costa and the Gulf Coast,we honor the leadership and hard work
of the students and their teachers and Principal at Stanley Middle School in Lafayette.
They are truly PEOPLE WHO CARE.
