SUBJECT: AUTHORIZATION OF EXPENDITURE FROM FISH AND WILDLFIE PROPAGATION FUND
SPECIFICREQUEST(S) OR RECOMMENDATION(S)'& BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION
RECOMM'ENQATIONS
AUTHORIZE the Auditor-Controller to transfer up to $3,600 to the Community Development'Department
from the Fish and Wildlife Propagation Fund to print brochures that inform County residents on how to deal'

Appropriation from Fish and Wildlife PropagationFund
December 6, 2005
On April 27, 2004, the County Board of Supervisors authorized the County Fish and Wildlife
Committee to use up to $5,000 from the Fish and Wildlife Propagation Fund to print brochures
that educate residents of the County on how to deal with wildlife in urban settings. Almost all the
copies that were printed in 2004 have been distributed and the Committee wishes to re-print them.
The brochure is about 12 pages long and 17 by 11 inches in size, stapled in the middle(81/2 by 11
inches finished). It includes numerous pictures of wild animals accompanied by easy-to-read text
describing how to deal with them when problems occur. If approved by the Board, the brochure
could be reprinted by January 2005.
A total of 10,000 brochures were printed in 2004. Five thousand copies were purchased by the
Alameda County Fish and Wildlife Commission. The rest were distributed throughout Contra
Costa County, ;including visitor centers at the Lindsay Wildlife Museum, the County Animal
Services Department, City of Antioch Animal Services Department, the East Bay Municipal Utility
District, and the East;Bay Regional Park District. A'writer from the Contra Costa Times also made
the brochure available to people who requested it. Some developers included the brochure in
their welcome packages to new home owners in their subdivision projects near open space.
On October 10;2005,the Committee unanimously agreed to recommend expenditure of no more
than $3600 to reprint 10,000 copies of the brochure. The Committee plans to make a minor
change on the contact information page as well. Although the Alameda County Fish and Game
Commission will not be purchasing 5,000 copies from the Committee, the Committee believes
there will be enough interest from the public interested in knowing more about how to take care of
wildlife and co-exist with wildlife in urban environments.
