I am currently a C CB member and sit on several active and working committees. I am aware of both the practical and the policy issues and concerns in the county regarding the homeless. I believe that I bring an understanding of systems issues as relates to pro�ams and policy as my skill. I have t�ecn a port of the homeless network in CCC for m- any years. I have worked in the menhealth dirvision of the county and have managed nonow profit prog�ams for homeless and disabled for over 15 years. I am a co, t_leutor to the process but I also learn so much from my peers, from Homeless Program Stiffand from the homeless people that I come in contact with each and every day. 26 What are some of your perceptions and/or opinions about homelessness in Coma Costa County? r.i1 NOU-29-2005 11:20 Of course&ere is not enough affordable hoaxing in CCC or for that matter anywbeTe for 91 homeless people. I see homeless families daily who have not chosen their plight but are now faced with lousing cost that are beyond their working income. There we many disabled people who have been on the streets so long that they really C see themselves in any other circumstance.They are distressed by their disability, sometimes their addiction and always by the -a -a- created by their lifestyle. T individuals are slowly coming in and entertaining change. The comm and the systems that are in place to assist these imdlviduals need to increase tunderstanding of the process involved with individuals developing a willin ess to end theirown homelessness. We must be tolerant and have the proper in progrmu place and match thew'p willingness when it happens with services d support. These are powerful process. 'They are not simple formulas that fit all siftations. In order for us to really end homelessness in seven more years these kinds of 39 Why are you interested in homeless issues? Worldag with and being involved with services and policy issues related to mental health, homelessness and affordable housing has been my life's work for over 25 years. In 1987 as a Mental Health Case Manager for CCC',I was assigned to be the mental health services liaison to the first non"armoty shelter in the county for people with a mental healthdisability. TMt was my first introduction to working with and learning from people who had no home, few resources swd no real voice to express thew" needs. My passion lead formed and I had found my niche. I have spent the last several years doing the work that llove—designing and operating PrograYns d delivering services to low income, homeless and disabled families and individuals whose voices are seldom hew-d. 4. What specific skills do you bring from you private or business life? 6 Ia my private life I sit on the board of Directors for Housing Rights Inc. Housing Rights ts Inc. is a non-profit that provides counseling,advocacy and teaches and advises the community about fair housing law and helps tenants fight housing discrimination in Alameda and Con Costa Counties,. I have been on this BOD for over 5 years. I currently have complete oversight of Transitional Housingfor STAND!Against D11. Being part of Ttl has given me the opportunity to be a part or a voice addressing DV in CCC. I have worked rn all sectors and feel I bring to the table my extensive professional, as well as,personal skills inmost social services areas (as stated question 1). 1 have personal experience in losing manyftiends to AIDS, some who were homeless or without family members or support. Personally, !have dealt with my own substance use and sobriety for over 20 years. I have started various programs that include: A Mentorship Program far teem in Oakland, theirs!Lotirro AIDS Support Group in Sacramento, a Men mho Batter Program in Sacramento and have served as an international AIDS Training consultant far Mexico City. 50 What are your main areas of interest relative to homeless issues, ie. emergency housing, education,health care,transitional housing, etc? Familiar with most issues. Being in an Advisory capacity, I will have the responsibility address ingladvocatingfor homeless issues.
