On this day, the Board of Supervisors accepted a presentation of the annual
People Who Care Awards, recognizing exceptional individuals, organizations,
businesses and communities of faith that have significantly contributed to making
a positive change for those who are homeless in Contra Costa County.

1. Recipient: Mr. Jeffrey Luchetti
Jeffrey Luchetti is a 10-year old student at Green Valley Elementary in Danville. He
has demonstrated a precocious ness concerning social issues, and a caring for
other that greatly exceeds his 10 years. Jeffrey has dressed up as Santa Claus for
the past two years, handing out candy at the three Multi-Service Centers operated by
Phoenix Programs. This past March, Jeffery organized a"small soaps"drive to
supply the County shelters. Lastly, when Jeffery teamed of the possibility that the
County shelters could be closed or greatly reduced in capacity, he was the impetus
of s letter writing campaign that resulted in 300 letters from elementary students to
their County Supervisor.

ward.2. Recipient: Ms. Merry Sturm
Gerry Sturm has organized and supervises a team of volunteers who pick-up
furniture and home furnishings, store the items, then deliver the household
necessities to homeless families that are transitioning into permanent housing.
Thanks to her and her delivery crew, over sixty apartments have been completely or
partially famished each year for the past two and a half years.

3. Recipient: Car. David Sammons on behalf of Mt. Diablo Unitarian Universalist
Church
In his almost twenty years as senior minister, Dr. David Sammons has led the Mt.
Diablo Unitarian Universalist Church in Walnut Creels in activities that promote social
justice and equality for the homeless. As a part of the Interfaith Council of Contra
Costa County, for the past seven years, and in collaboration with SHELTER, Inc, Mt.
Diablo Unitarian Church in partnership with B'nai Shalom has provided food and
shelter during the winter months. Last year, Dr. David Sammons heartily advocated
for the opening of an Orinda shelter for homeless families with children.

4. Recipient: Morrison & Foerster
Morrison &Foerster of Walnut Creek provided legal services to the Homeless
Summit,which led to awell-planners strategy for applying to the City of Orinda to
open a family shelter in the city. The law fire assigned tow attorneys pro-bong to
direct expansion of Winter Nights Program's Business flan and Client Guidelines.
Morrison &Foerster's professional guidance led to intense planning sessions over a
nine-month period of time, resulting in meetings with the Orinda City Manager
followed by three Town Meetings of dialogue with Orinda residents on the subject of
opening a shelter.

5. Recipient: The Homeless Summit
The Homeless Summit, convened by the Interfaith Council of Contra Costa County,
includes 25 congregations and other faith organizations, Loaves and Fishes, county,
state, and federal government staffers, League of Women Voters of Diablo Valley,
SHELTER, Inc., businesses, and some 200 volunteers. The Homeless Summit
Developed the Winter Nights Shelter's lousiness Flan and Client Guidelines,
advocates for services for the homeless, searches for facilities to house the Winter
Nights Program for homeless families with children, and acts as an Advisory Board to
Winter Nights.
