Lead Poisoning Prevention Week }
WHEREAS, childhood lead poisoning is a silent but harmful environmental illness that can cause
long-term harm to children, including leaming difficulties and behavior problems; and
WHEREAS, to keep our children safe and healthy, lead hazards should be removed from a child's
environment, all children under the age of six should be screened for lead poisoning risks and at-ris
children should receive blood tests for lead; and
WHEREAS, despite limited screening, the County has identified more than 780 lead-poisoned
children, the majority from low-income communities; and 1
WHEREAS, Contra Costa County's Lead Poisoning Prevention Project has been working since 199
to Identify lead-poisoned children, to provide follow-up and preventive services and to educate
residents about lead poisoning prevention; and
WHEq AS, the major premise behind Contra Costa County's Lead Poisoning Prevention Project is
to recognize that lead poisoning is preventable, and that the strategies required to make an impact
on public health begin with the collaboration of many agencies and so-gments of the community, an
WHEREAS, partners of the Contra Costa County Lead Poisoning Prevention Project include, but a
not limited to, Contra Costa County Community Services Department/Head Start and Early Head
Start;,WIC (Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children); Child Heait
and Disability Prevention Program; Monument Community Partnership; Brookside Community Heal h
Center, North Richmond Center for Health, La Clinica and other community clinics; Healthy
Neighborhoods Project; Childhood Injury Prevention Coalition; Contra Costa Child Care Council;
Health.Access Coalition; Welcome Home Baby, Anemia Coalition; West County Asthma Coalition;
On the Move with �oodWise; Homeless Coalition; Hazardous Materials Program and Environmental
Health; and the City of Richmond, Project REAL; and
WHEREAS, despite efforts at education and prevention, residents in Contra Costa County continu
to be poisoned by lead from deteriorated lead-based paint, other sources in the home, workplace
exposure and historic environmental contamination.
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Board of Supervisors does declare October 24-3 ,
2004, as Lead Poisoning Prevention Week in Contra Costa County.
