HomeMy WebLinkAboutMINUTES - 10192004 - 2004-570 RESOLUTION NO . 2004/570 Contra Costa County OCTOBER 19 , 2 0 0 4 Resolution Declaring a Mate of Local:Emergency in Contra Costa County Resulting from Influenza Vaccine Shortage WHEREAS, approximately one half of the expected supply of influenza vaccine for the United States will not be available for the current influenza season; and WHEREAS, Contra Costa County Health Services received most of its supply of influenza vaccine from the California Department of Health Services; and WHEREAS, California does not have any State purchased adult vaccine available to distribute of health jurisdictions, and WHEREAS, in Contra Costa County persons at highest risk for complications of influenza include approximately 100,000 adults over 65 years of age, children ages 6 to 23 months, and infants under 6 months of age who are too young to receive influenza vaccine; and, WHEREAS, in the United States, more than 36, 000 people die annually of complications related to influenza, approximately 100 of these in Contra Costa; and WHEREAS, the California State Public Health Officer, Dr. Richard Jackson issued a Public Health Order on October 8, 2004, directing all healthcare providers in California to limit provision of flu vaccine only to persons in high-risk categories and to refrain from immunizing health person; and WHEREAS, there exists a critical local public health crisis in that there is extreme peril to the health and safety of vulnerable populations including the medically fragile, the elderly and young children caused by the influenza vaccine shortage; and WHEREAS, immediate action is needed to protect the limited supply of vaccine and ensure that vaccine is provided to the most at risk individuals; NOW,THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors hereby proclaims the existence of a state of local emergency within the county due to the shortage of influenza vaccine 3 hereby certify that this is a true and correct copy of an action taken and entered on the minutes of the Beard of Supervisors on the date shown.
