HomeMy WebLinkAboutMINUTES - 10052004 - C16-C21 J4e &ardCJ taperV ijVl i o Co n to a (fw t a Co n t y, (fa li.16- ia r' In the Matter of Honoring Deputy Public Defender, Sheldon Sarfan To Commemorate His Retirement `RESOLUTION NO.2004/496 WHEREAS, Sheldon Sarfan is retiring from the Office of the Public Defender after twenty-three years of exemplary service, and WHEREAS, after beginning his career of public service on top of a police car in Sproul Plaza as a trusted aide of Mario Savio in the Free Speech Movement, WHEREAS, after graduating from Boalt Hall School of Law at Berkeley in 1970, WHEREAS, after serving for four years as a Supervising Attorney for the Legal Aid Society of San Diego until beginning his career in Contra Costa County, WHEREAS, Sheldon has handled all the kinds of cases–from juvenile to homicides—contained in 23 years of assignments in the Department, WHEREAS, Sheldon.has represented the clients of the :Department with sensitivity, concern and nonpareil thoroughness, WHEREAS, Sheldon has devoted more than a quarter century of his life to assisting poor and impoverished members of society by protecting their constitutional and legal rights, NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of the County of Contra Costa acknowledges and thanks Sheldon Sarfan for his dedicated service to the Office of the Public Defender, the clients of that Office and the people of this County on the occasion of his retirement as an employee of Contra Costa County. Rates for African American, Asian/Pacific Islanders, Hispanics and Caucasian women are all above the State average; and WHEREAS, the five-year survival rate for patients whose cancers are diagnosed at an early stage as a result of early detection through breast exams and mammograms is over 95%; and WHEREAS, according to the American Cancer Society, breast cancer can strike those who have no family history of the disease or any other risk factors and that 39% of women in California age 40 and older are still not getting annual mammograms; and WHEREAS, the Contra Costa Health Services is sponsoring three women's health events featuring free breast exams and mammograms to those without insurance at Pittsburg Health Center, Contra Costa Regional Medical Center in Martinez and at the Richmond Health Center. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of Contra Costa County does hereby proclaim the month of October 2004 as "Breast Cancer Awareness Month."
