The teens chance to address these issues in open forum with their local government officials and county representatives. HISTORY: The City of Pittsburg's Youth Advisory Council has hosted a Youth Conference annually since 1994. Some of the major issues that have a recurring front are violence in the schools,the lack of"youth oriented businesses", employment opportunities within the community,and transportation. Recognizing that some issues cannot be addressed at the local level,the ideal for a regional approach was borne; bringing together teens, local and county officials representing East/further East County, Central County and West County to seek solutions. Presenters City of Pittsburg,Hercules, Oakley, Antioch and District V Supervisor's office,Los Medanos College. Invitations were sent to every city council, youth council,and school district within Contra Costa County for this planning meeting. Paul suggested that we expand that list to include school boards, county youth groups and commissions...Bay Point has a new youth group forming, CITY'S/AGENCY CCINTRIBUTIONS/SPONSORS. • City of Pittsburg has budgeted$2,400 for this event to include marketing, materials, food supplies,etc. additional funding is needed to make this event a success. Additional cost would be recaptured:by charging $10/participant to include registration materials, morning and afternoon refreshments and t-shirts. We are able to accommodate 350 teens at the conference so registration will be on a first come, first served basis. • Merl suggested that each city solicit businesses in their community to contribute, i.e. sponsors for food,t-shirts,printing, etc. All sponsors would be listed on t-shirts, promotions and programs. • Paul proposed that his office look into getting county business to sponsor youth for the event. Possibly getting 35 business to sponsor 10 youth,goal-$3,500. • Gina has a contact for t-shirts and would be willing to work on this. • Dennis will set up transportation from Oakley,Brentwood, Discovery Bay and Antioch to the conference. • Janine and Merl will take the leadership track and do a"Fun-damentals" leadership workshop and look into getting other workshops for this track. YOUTH PARTICIPATION • Local Youth Councils and County Youth Commission will be invited to participate in development of workshops REGISTRATION AND MARKETING • Registration forms will be developed and mailed to youth councils, school leadership classes, city recreation departments and community youth groups. Each city will gather a mailing list from their city. • KMEL in past years has done marketing at no cost as a sponsor and have also come out to the event with give aways. • Local cable channel • Newspapers • Blanket schools with flyers MASTER PLAN Morning General Session could be a youth presentation to Supervisors, Advisors and Local Councilmembers addressing issuse facing county teens. Topics would be a result from those submitted by youth councils. A separate track set up for adult advisors for roundtable discussions on possible solutions/alternatives/suggestions to address these issues. Closing general session would be a forum for both teen panel and adults. • Develop Links o Education and Businesses • Local Government o Media • Develop Workshops-possible ideas o Lifeskills—nutrition, health,relationships, intervention, banking © Education/Carreer Devlopment © Vocational Schools o Colleges o Guest Speakers a Presenters o Physical Track.—3 on 3,karate, dance, theatre SPONSORS • Food Sponsors—Set up a food court • Each city try and get three sponsors from their city • All sponsors will be listed on all promotions Next meeting scheduled for January 13, 2004 at 9:30 a.m. at the Neighborhood Center, 65 Civic Avenue. The meeting was great, active communities for the steering committee are: East County: City of Pittsburg City of Antioch City of Oakley West County City of Hercules City of Pinole County Wide Youth Commission Supervisor Glover's Office We are still in need of representation from the Central County. Latest updates: Saturday, March 20, 2004 8:30-5:00 p.m. Los Medanos College (schedule is attached) We have you scheduled to open the program and provide the welcoming and introduction of dignitaries. Invitations are going out to all City Councils,Youth Councils, Board of Supervisors, and State, County and Local officials and Student Leaderships We have request for funding from the Board of Supervisors for$3,500 to pay the cost for 350 participants at$1'0 each. The$10 registration fee covers morning, noon and afternoon refreshments, and registration materials, t-shirts. Allocations for slots are going to be divided by [District zones(we are still working on the logistics). The Countywide Youth Commission will be responsible for distribution of flyers. The City allocated in this budget$2500 for our normal youth conference. The Countywide Youth Commission will also be the youth panel for the morning general session where they will present their findings on universal problems in the county facing our teens. The hope is that the adult officials will be able to network during the day to discuss and offer avenues of resources or solutions to the commission during the closing general session. l am in need of your assistance in extending an invitation to other City Councils throughout the County to have a representative be a part of this panel. On another note,we have no active Pittsburg Youth Commission at this time. All terms expired on 12131/04;my thoughts would be to begin advertising for the vacancy Feb-March with March interviews, recruiting through student leaderships, and the local newspaper. Any suggestions?
