SUBJECT: Presentation of a Donation to the Health Services Department from the Contra
Costa Regional Health Foundation
RECOMMENDATION:
That the Board of Supervisors direct the Health Services Director to accept on behalf of the Health
Services Department, Contra Costa Regional Medical Center and Contra Costa Health Centers,
the first ever donation from the recently created Contra Costa Regional Health Foundation.
BACKGROUND:
In 2003, the Health Services Director recommended to the Board of Supervisors that a hospital
and health centers not for profit 501(c)(3) foundation be created. The purpose of the foundation is
to highlight the programs and services provided by Contra Costa Regional Medical Center and
Contra Costa Health Centers, and to eventually be a fundraising arm for this division of the Health
Services Department. During much of 2003, community members were identified as possible
founding members of the Board. The Board had its first meeting in April 2003 and immediately
began to set strategic goals for the first year of its existence. A "case" statement for the
Foundation was developed along with Articles of Incorporation, Bylaws, committee structure, and a
slate of officers. The State of California and the Internal Revenue Service granted the non-profit
501(c)(3) status in December 2003. In early 2004, the Board agreed to plan for its first Gala
Fundraising Event, which was held on Saturday, October 9, 2004. "Jazz in the Park," held on the
grounds of the beautiful John Muir National Historic Site in Martinez was a grand success. This
donation is a result of the hard work and dedication of the Board of Directors of the Contra Costa
Regional Health Foundation.
FISCAL IMPACT:
This donation of$30,000 will allow the Contra Costa Regional Medical Center and Contra Costa
Health Centers to purchase needed equipment that otherwise would not be available through the
normal budgeting process.
