HomeMy WebLinkAboutMINUTES - 12142004 - C.35 In the Matter of Honoring Tony Calderon for his Contributions ) to Contra Costa County in the Communities } of Pacheco and Martinez ) RESOLUTION NO. 2004/543 WHEREAS, Tony Calderon was born and raised in Martinez, California where he graduated from Alhambra High School; and WHEREAS, Tony Calderon began his career as a local businessperson in Pacheco at the age of 18 years and has continued to work in this community since that time, including opening and operating the Pacheco Town Barbershop for the past 14 years; and WHEREAS, Tony Calderon initiated his community service and activism by joining the Club Cultural Mexican to promote the historical and cultural significance of the local Mexican American community. During his tenure with the Club Cultural Mexican he was able to successfully promote a parade honoring the Mexican American community; and WEREAS, Tony Calderon also investigated, initiated and brought to fruition, the concept of designating the land donated by Don Ygnacio on Alhambra Avenue as a city park, and participated in the groundbreaking ceremonies for the Don Ygnacio Plaza in 1976; and WHEREAS, Tony Calderon served on the Martinez Bi,Centennial Committee, the Martinez Community Center Task Force and ran for the City Council of Martinez, and WHEREAS, Tony Calderon joined the Pacheco Town Council in 1989 and revitalized that body to successfully defeat a proposed annexation to Pleasant Hill, defeated a proposed extension of Marsh Drive, secured the property and funding to build the Pacheco Community Center, and won community support for the Pacheco Beautification Project; and NOW THEREFORE; BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors extends to Tony Calderon special recognition for his outstanding and selfless service for the betterment of the people in Contra Costa County in the communities of Pacheco and Martinez.
