RECOGNIZING DISTRICT 1 � ASIAN AND ASIAN AiV.)rERICAN COMMUNITY ARTS ORGANIZATIONS AND ARTISTS RESOLUTION NO. 2004/647 WHEREAS,Contra Costa County recognizes art passages.collections of art from contra costa county as an exhibition program designed to create an opportunity for artists to show their work to a larger public,to support the larger community's awareness of and familiarity with County artists,and to form relationships with regional art organizations and to attract potential buyers for County artists'work;and WHEREAS,The Richmond Arts and Culture Commission is collaborating with the Arts&Culture Commission of Contra Costa County to present the artwork of Asian and Asian American artists residing in West Contra Costa County; WHEREAS,The Richmond Arts and Culture Commission was established to promote and encourage fine arts and performing arts,and to act in an advisory capacity to the City of Richmond concerning its artistic and cultural development and the preservation of its artistic heritage; WHEREAS,Asian and Asian Americans residents make up nearly 17%of the population and represent over 15 different ethnic groups, based on the recent U.S.Census. Chinese, Filipino,Japanese and South Asian(including India, Pakistan and Bangladesh) residents are joined by people of Southeast Asian descent(including the countries of Laos,Vietnam, Cambodia and Burma),as well as people of many other Asian countries and ethnicities call West Contra Costa County their home; WHEREAS,Individual Asian artists as well as several Asian arts organizations are participating in the Arts and Culture Commission of Contra Costa County(ACS)sponsored art passages district 1 exhibition,East Meets West County: Celebrating Asian and Asian American Artists in West Contra Costo County. Artists represented in this exhibition include: Mr.Calma,Alexander Chen,Yun Chung Chiang, Cion Delcollo,Sadaka Okino Delcollo, Bay Dumaran, Mr.Estrella,Arnel Evangelista, Mr. Garung, Kikuko Gasser,Abel Gomez,Tzu Chin Han,Nylan Jeung,Fu Jiang,Lily Eri Kaku, Hatsue Katsura,Sha Fung Lang,Mr. Leal, Kathleen Li, Hui Liu,Steven Lowe, Manero Martin, Eddie Manuel,Matthew Matsuoka, Mario Narimatsu, Keiko Nelson,Suzanne Onodera, Mr.Sarabia,Serafin Medina, Mieko Taketa,Yayoi Takizawa, Eileen Tang, Ellen Yamada Tzvetin,Victor Villa, Monica Xu and the Women of the East Bay Free Methodist Church;and WHEREAS,EI Cerrito based Wen Wu School was founded by Dr.Yun Chung Chiang,and teaches art along with martial arts, gigong,medicine and philosophy. The goal of the school is to promote traditional Chinese culture so that students will attain good health and longevity. Virtue and character building are taught in accordance with the"four classical texts"of the Confucian school,and are taught by Dr.Chiang along with his wife, Professor Hui Liu, Dr. Erlene Chiang,and twelve assistant teachers;and WHEREAS, Pinole based Fil Arts Gallery,the first Filipino Art Gallery in the City of Pinole,opened its doors in June 2004 by owners Paul and Baby Pazcoguin,recent immigrants from the Philippines. Fil Arts Gallery presents the work of Filipino artists that capture the spirit of the Philippines,its culture,its people,and sceneries; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT the Board of Supervisors of Contra Costa County does hereby declare the above artists and arts organizations treasures of our county and region,and urges residents to continue to support the artistic and creative endeavors of these individuals and organizations.
