HomeMy WebLinkAboutMINUTES - 11042003 - PR1 In the Mlattcr of Proclaiming ) November 2003 as ) Homeless Awareness Month } RESOLUTION NO.2003/614 WHEREAS, decent, safe, and affordable housing is one of the basic necessities of life, and z WHEREAS, affordable housing is of vital importance to the health and well-being of all Contra Costa County residents;and WHEREAS, many of the homeless are seniors, children, and/or disabled, and WHEREAS, on any given night in Contra Costa County 6,895 unsheltered persons are homeless, including children,and WHEREAS, hundreds more are paying over 30 percent, and many over 50 percent, of their income for housing and are at significant risk of losing their housing and becoming homeless; and WHEREAS, the Contra Costa County Homeless Continuum of Care Board, has organized events during National Homeless Awareness Month to acknowledge the need for;and the contributions of, affordablehousing for everyone, not just a privileged few: NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors hereby proclaims November 2003 as Homeless Awareness Month in the Contra Costa County and urges all Contra Costans to participate in activities held throughout the month to commemorate this observance. Individual Award(Presenter should be Supervisor John Gioia) 1. Recipient: Fred Fogg Fred Fogg is a dedicated volunteer at the Souper Center,a part of GRIP's one-stop center for homeless adults and families. He works there each weekday,and recruits others to do the same. His contributions include building the self-esteem of Souper Center clients,educating the community about homeless issues, and helping to fund youth education at Calli House Emergency Shelter for Runaway and Homeless Teens. Individual Award(Presenter should be Supervisor Gayle Uilkema) 2. Recipient: Donna Bell For the past two years, Donna Bell,principal of Green Valley Elementary,has been the driving force behind the"Small Soaps Drive." The drive provides enough hygiene supplies for approximately 1500- 2000 homeless men and women. She has planted a seed of social concern in all of her students and is teaching all of them,and their parents, how to make that seed grow. Faith Award(Presenter should be Supervisor Millie Greenburg) 3. Recipient: The HOPE Conference The HOPE Conference has helped over 900 people,more than half of those children,between 1993 and 2003. The HOPE Conference has distributed approximately$130,000 in contributions to those in danger of becoming homeless. When families or individuals are in crisis the HOPE Conference helps to keep them housed by paying bills temporarily,so that the home may be stabilized. The HOPE 1 Conference operates through the generous donations of the faith community,both in dollars and volunteer service hours. Business Award(Presenter should be Supervisor Mark©e Saulnier) 4. Recipient: Paris Beauty College Paris Beauty College offers free hair cuts to the homeless of Contra Costa County on the last Tuesday and Wednesday of each month. Clients who are looking for work appreciate the assistance to look their best for interviews and starting on the job. Also,children from homeless families feel great about themselves when they look like their peers at school. Paris Beauty College does a tremendous community service and increases self-esteem for the homeless individuals and families. Recipient: Loaves and Fishes of Contra Costa The mission of Loaves and Fishes of Contra Costa is"to feed the hungry of Contra Costa County.,, They are committed to feeding all individuals and families in need of food. Loaves and Fishes provides hot meals live days per week. Along with providing nutrition for the body,the spirits of homeless and hungry are fed through the positive,welcoming environment at Loaves and Fishes. •Page 2
