HomeMy WebLinkAboutMINUTES - 11042003 - C43-C44 A YM V .I V fl J r 0/9"A"M�ql 1 RESOLUTION COMMEMORATING RESOLUTION 2003/678 THE GRAND OPENING CELEBRATION OF THE ALFRED ZAMPA MEMORIAL BRIDGE WHEREAS,on September 12,2000 Senate Resolution 97 was signed into law designating the new westbound span of the Carquinez Bridge as the Alfred Zampa Memorial Bridge in honor of local ironworker Alfred Zampa; and WHEREAS,Alfred Zampa, a native son of Crockett, started his career in ironworking by joining the crews constructing the 1927 Carquinez Bridge, and continued with bridges across the country including the Bay Bridge,the Golden Gate Bridge, and the 1958 Carquinez Bridge; and WHEREAS, the Carquinez Strait communities of Crockett and Vallejo have worked tirelessly to support, promote, an ,celebrate the new bridge; and W]HEREAS, a Bridge Celebration Committee has been formed to organize the opening day festivities and celebrate the new bridge with a fireworks show, the largest bridge fireworks show on the San Francisco Bay since the 5e Anniversaryof the Golden Gate Bridge; and WHEREAS, on March 3, 2000, at age 92, on a bluff overlooking the Carquinez Strait, Al'Zampa joined in the groundbreaking of a new bridge on the bay. Sadly, two months later, Mr. Zampa passed away. In his memory, the California.State Legislature voted unanimously to name the bridge after this rugged ironworker; the Alfred Zampa MemorialBridge is the first major structure named in honor of a working man;and WHEREAS, the Alfred Zampa Memorial Bridge is the first suspension bridge built in America in nearly 30 years; it's towers stand 4400 feet above water and 300 feet below. With cable, deck and tower lighting, it is the only fully illuminated bridge on the San Francisco Bay. NOW, THEREFOR " E'V . - OLVED that we honor and celebrate the 0. He has been actively involved with youth sports, from soccer, baseball and basketball to the Acalanes High School Tennis and Mock Trial teams; and "EREAN Budd MacKenzie has worked over the years in support of community safety and neighborhood action; and WHEREAS, Budd MacKenzie sees things that need:to be changed and his excitement drives him to respond and make a difference for the betterment of the entire community ; and WHEREAS, Budd MacKenzie has demonstrated his commitment to the world community by extending his goodwill and good deeds abroad in rebuilding needed schools in Afghanistan; NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that we honor and congratulate 1 La, ayeUe 2003 Citizen of f`tie Year PASSED by a nanimous vote of the Board of Supervisors this 4th day of November, 2003.
