A LETTER!, dated October 14, 2003, from Levi Strauss& Co. notifying the Board of
Supervisors of tentative plans to implement a workforce reduction among certain employees
working in the facility located at 3000 Oak Road, Walnut Creek, California. The company
estimates eight employees from the Walnut Creek facility to be laid off, approximately 50
employees within 75 miles of the Oak Road location.
IT IS BY THE BOARD ORDERED►that the above mentioned matter is REFERRED to the
Employment and Human Services Department .

Dear Supervisor DeSaulnier:
Levi Strauss & Co. has developed tentative plans to implement a workforce
reduction among certain employees working in the facility located at 3000 Oak Road,
Walnut Creek, CA. Consistent with these plans, employment separations are expected
to commence on or about December 12, 2003. We anticipate that these changes, when
finalized, would be permanent.
At this time, the Company anticipates that a group of affected employees will
have their employment terminated during successive 14-day periods commencing on
December 12, 2003. A list of job titles and the number of employees currently holding
affected positions accompanies this letter as Attachment A, which includes the list of
successive 14-day periods. This announcement and the above timetable are based on
the best information currently available. However, various factors may still affect the
timing of any employment terminations. You will be informed of any significant changes
in these plans as additional information becomes available.
The total number of affected employees in the U.S. is approximately 350. We
anticipate that more than 50 employees will be laid off within 75 miles of the 3000 Oak
Road location in Walnut Creek. Bumping arrangements are not available for affected
employees. There is no union representation at this facility.
To the extent that the above actions constitute a covered event under the Worker
Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act4, this letter is intended to fulfill any
requirements imposed under the Act. By providing this information, the Company does
not concede that the Act applies or that notice is otherwise required.
4 This notice is provided without prejudice to Levi Strauss&Co.'s rights and defenses under the
federal Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act('WARN"), California Labor Code
Section 1400 et seq. and any other law, including the application of WARN to any individual
employee or single site of employment. This notice is provided under both WARN's technical
requirements and WARN Section 7,which encourages employers to provide notice even "where
not required." See U.S.C. §2107; 20 C.F.R. § 639.1(c), (e).

operations at Levi Strauss & Co.'s facility located at 3000 Oak Road, Walnut Creek, CA.
