TO BOOST LITERACY SKILLS OF ALL CHILDREN IN WEST CONTRA COSTA COUNTY Whereas, West County Reads! is a con-I . ty wide collabi r tion of parents, teachers, civic and business leaders committed raising the litexacy skills cif all children in WestContra Costa County;and Whereas,West County Reads!was founded by the Community Alliance for Public Education(CAPE) in October 2001; and Whereas, the mission of'West County Reads! is to ensure that every child in West Contra Costa County is read to 20 minutes each day and every child reads at grade level upon completion of third grade; and Whereas, reading difficulty contributes to school failure, which increases e risk of absenteeism, school drop out,juvenile delinquency,and substance abuse; and "Whereas,West County Reads!has been instrumental in organizing conuni'ty book drives that benefit' libraries and schools, recruited volunteer readers to schools, and participated in com. unity even s tca raise the importance of literacy to parents,teachers;l ds Arid community residents; and,. Whereas,Went County Reads,is dependent on the participation and volunteer efforts of community groups and individuals,such as;Susan Wittenberg of the West Count Ed Fu rd,George Harris;III of the West Cantu Costa Llai,f"red School District,Rana Renner+�f T iser Permanente's.teach Out an Read Program;Judy Sam of Read Aloud Volunteers,Carol Weinsteinaf B'ay.,Ar'ea Corry unit�Resouurees,Robin Wilson, and Don DelcKevin ufferd, and MaryAnn Gallagher. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of 5upervt ors of Contra Costa County recognizes and honors the important collaborative work West County'Reads!'has achieved to boast literacy skills for all-children in.the community.
