HomeMy WebLinkAboutMINUTES - 09092003 - PR.1 In the Matter of Honoring ) Torn Asad' ) /1' ._ for his ten years of service ) RESOLUTION NO. 20031523 WHEREAS Tom Aswad has been a Contra Costa businessman for twenty six years, managing and overseeing some 22 properties throughout California and a 44 year County resident;and WHEREAS Tom Aswad for the past ten year has devoted his life and talents to serving those seeking to reclaim their lives from the oppression of drugs and alcohol; and WHEREAS Toni..Aswad is a ten year member of the Contra Costa County Alcohol and Other Drugs Advisory Committee, as well as a member of the Recovering Citizens Action Network, the State and National Liaison for Partners in Recovery Alliance and the lead facilitator for the Substance Abuse Recovery Support Group at Hillside Covenant Church in Walnut Creek. He has served as Chair of the Substance Abuse Advisory Board of Contra Costa County from 1997.2001 and Vice Chair from 1995 to 1997. Tom was Co-Chair and Chair of the Partnership for a Drug Free Contra Costa 1995.1996;and WHEREAS Tom Aswad has a special concern for the needs of young people in their battle with substance abuse. He facilitated the Alcohol and Other Drug Workshop for a semester at Olympic High School in 2003, and in 2002 facilitated Students Anonymous, meeting at Clayton Valley High School. He has served as a mentor for the Teen Initiative Program helping young people to advocate for prevention and treatment services in our County;and WHEREAS Tom Aswad is an acknowledged speaker and advocate for Needle Exchange and HIV education, and is a prior member of the HIV Prevention Planning Group for Contra Costa County,focusing on substance abuse and its link to AIDS; and R'H.E'REA,S' Tom Aswad has received numerous awards including: • Health Services Department, Distinguished Service Award,July 2001 • Mt. Diablo School District, Outstanding Service Award, May 2000 and California Congress of Parent, Teachers and Students, 32'District, Honorary Service Award February 2000, both for spearheading and administering the most collaborative countywide California Healthy Kids Survey •Contra Costa Substance Services, Leadership Recognition Award,July 1998 •Contra Costa County Supervisor Mark DeSaulnier, Service Award,January 1997,for Youth Vote 1996 •Contra Costa County.Board of Supervisors, People Who Make a Difference Award, March 1996 +County Alcohol and Drug Program Administrators'Association of California, 12th Annual Valuing Diversity Award, June 1995 for his efforts to reintroduce Narcotics Anonymous to County Jails •Contra Costa County Supervisors Volunteer Service Award, March 1995; and WHEIrIEASTom Aswad has for ten years devoted his life, his energy and his personal resources to the recovery of countless individuals in their battle with substance abuse. NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of Contra Costa hereby recognizes Tom Aswad for his outstanding service and wishes him every success in his future efforts on behalf of us all.
