requests using the PUBLIC ACCESS CHANNELS
bulletin board, PSA or community event calendar

Conference, Executive Director and Committee a request
to encourage all its members to "Proclaim March 16-22,
2002 Media Democracy Week" and attached a sample
proclamation, (see back side) which was developed by the national
Alliance for Community Mediaww. f 11rjCec .
Concord could highlight in its proclamation its current
Government Access Channel schedule of public meetings, its
police programming, its weekly comment/schedule program and
showings of expected: community events it sponsors during 2003,

The Alliance for Community Media is designating March 16-22, 2€03 as?redia Democracy Week. ���
We hope access centers around the country will join with us in reaching out to the communities
through various activities to educate and advocate on behalf of media democracy.
Below is a list of a few things you can do to celebrate and recognize Media.Democracy Week, Of
course, you are perfectly welcome to come pp with your own ideas used on your knowledge of your
community and what you think will work l
• Media Democracy Week Proclamation, Have your city council, county council, cable
commission or other entities pass a resolution proclaiming.March 16-22, 21003 as Media
Democracy Week and honoring your facility. A51! lei yaI ation s,att c fed,.
• Petition for Media Democracy. Circulate the Pitt ion f i— PY!edia Dem 'craw to the following
groups in your community: Service Clubs and Organizations,Religious Institutions, ARP,
VFW, League of Women Voters, etc;Ethnic Organizations,Disabilities Rights Groups,Unions,
Chambers of Commerce, Gay and Lesbian Organizations,Women's Rights Groups,Political
Groups, Consumer's Groins, Business Clubs, Sororities and Fraternities, Student Groups, etc.
Thirsk of all those groups in your community that you currently work with and seek out those
that you want to do outreach to, The petition is a great conversation starter.
• Get the word out on a local level! trite a press rebase on media Democracy week and get it
out to the comraunity__Do aat your access center that you can send to your local TV and
radio broadcasters. Get posters put up on bus sups and buses, taxis, etc. Interview local
officials on the topic. Have buttons, bumper stickers, etc. made and pass therm out to the
• Involve your cable operator!! Have your cable operator honer your centerwith a certificate or
award, Honor yourcableoperator with a certificate or award. Congratulate the cable operator
on their contribution to "media democracy."
• Be an individual voice! Offer to speak to local groups about community media and media
democracy-- many local groups look for speakers for their meetings, let them know you are
available,
• Put it in writing! Write a letter to the editor to all of your local newspapers on media.

• host a local event! Hold an event in your community to kick off Media Democracy Week. Try
