John Sweeten Executive Director a DATE- February 4, 2403 SUBJECT: U.S. Economic Development Administration-support Budget Allocation of$365.5 Mullion SPECIFIC REQUEST(S)OR RECOMMENDATIONS(S) & BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION RECOMMENDATION SUPPORT restoring the U.S.Economic DevelopmentAdministration's budget to$365.5 million, which i the biggest federal financial supporter of economic development initiatives', and AUTHORIZE ORI the Chair, to execute letters of support to the senate and louse Appropriation Committees, and the County's federal legislative delegation. BACKGROUND The U.S. Senate intends to appropriate $257.9 million for the U. S. Economic Development Administration (EDA)during the Fiscal Year 2003, representing a reduction of nearly 77 million from FY 2002, Of this amount,$15 million is earmarked for Alaska, leaving U42.9 available for all other EDA programs and activities. The reduced funding, levels will negatively affect'EDA's ability to carry out their economic development initiatives. Additionally, the Redevelopment Agency plans to submit an approximate$3.4 million EISA grant application to establish a Machining and Tooling Business Incubator for North Richmond. The reduction of EDA funds would severely hinder the Agency's ability to bring the North Richmond incubator to fruition. The economy is a priority issue and concern for the nation and the restoration of funding to the EISA at the $365.5 million level is crucial to facilitate economic development.
