INIRECOGNITION OF THE RESOLUTION NO. 2003/689
COMPASSIONATE AND DEDICATED
COMMUNITY SERVICE PROVIDED BY
THE NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF ART AND
DISIBILITIES(NIAD),
WHEREAS,the National Institute of Art and Disabilities(NIAD),a nonprofit organization,was founded in 1982 to provide an
art program for adults with developmental disabilities;and
WHEREAS,NIAD promotes creative expression,independence,dignity,and community integration;and
WHEREAS,NIAD currently serves over 50 adults,providing them with the space,materials,and training to become working
artists,who make,show,and sell their work;and
WHEREAS,NIAD artists participate in public art projects and collaborate with other artists;and
WHEREAS,NIAD artists earn money from sales of their work;and
WHEREAS,NIAD offers award winning studio programs in painting and drawing;ceramics and sculpture;mixed media;
printmaking;fiber arts;art presentation and appreciation;language arts,including poetry,creative writing and computer
literacy;and independent living skills,including cooking,shopping,hygiene,gardening,and personal safety;and
WHEREAS,NIAD was named the 2003 Nonprofit Business of the Year by the Richmond Chamber of Commerce;and
WHEREAS,NIAD was awarded the 2003 Commendation of Excellence from the Independent National Auditing Service for
delivering the highest quality of care to the developmentally disabled;and
WHEREAS,NIAD received the 1998 Vineyard Award in Service Excellence from the Golden Gate Chapter of the
Association of Fundraising Professionals;and
WHEREAS,NIAD clients care for a bountiful community garden that brings them nutritious foods;and
WHEREAS,NIAD runs the Florence Ludens-Katz Gallery at its Richmond headquarters,a full service art gallery mounting
five annual shows of client's work and facilitating artists'participation in national and international shows;and
WHEREAS,NIAD is supported by the Regional Center of the East Bay,private donations,and grants
N I OW,THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of Contra Costa County hereby honors the
dedicated,dignified,and creative efforts of NIAD and its irreplaceable contribution to citizens of the county.
PASSED by unanimous vote of the Board of Supervisors members present on this 9tn day of December 2003.
