Background:
The Center for Community-Based Organizations of Contra Costa is a strategic initiative with a
mission to increase the capacity of Contra Costa County's nonprofit community. The organization
grew out of a meeting in June 2002 involving nonprofit leaders from 36 organizations and
representatives from higher education, philanthropy, County government, and the business
community. Two parallel initiatives came together at this meeting: one, initiated by the Children and
Families Policy Forum, focused on building nonprofit institutional capacity to better serve the
residents of our County; and the other, initiated by California State University Hayward, on building
community leadership and citizen participation.
The County has invested $75,000 in start-up funds for this initiative. This is a report to the Board of
Supervisors through the Family and Human Services Committee on progress to date.
