In the Matter of RESOLUTION NO.2003/686
HONORING YOUTH ENRICHMENT STRATEGIES FOR ITS WORK
ON BEHALF OF WEST COUNTY CHILDREN AND YOUTH
WHEREAS, Youth Enrichment Strategies (YES), a non-profit organization dedicated to exposing low-
income children and youth to music, nature and the arts,was established in 1999 by Berkeley resident
Diane Mintz;and
WHEREAS,prior to the establishment of YES,Ms.Mintz tutored elementary students at South Richmond's
Coronado Elementary School;and
WHEREAS,Ms.Mintz established and sustained the activities of YES while maintaining her full-tune job as
a real estate agent in Berkeley,CA;and
WHEREAS,Ms.Mintz's dedication has created numerous opportunities for low-income students attending
schools,including Coronado,Dover,Stege,Verde and Wilson elementary schools,Adams,Helms,Lavona
Dejean and Portola middle schools and Richmond High School, to experience arts, educational and
outdoors activities that otherwise would not be available to them;and
WHEREAS,Ms.Mintz,together with YES volunteers,has led monthly field trips for up to 14 students to
explore the cultural and natural riches of the Bay Area;and
WHEREAS,since the summer of 1999,Ms.Mintz has made it possible for 754 low-income students in West
County to attend quality overnight summer camps,including Camp Winnarainbow,Camp Lorna Mar,
CYO Summer Camp,Cazadero Performing Arts Camp and Life School outdoor adventure camp;and
WHEREAS,the number of students participating in Ms.Mintz's summer camp program has grown every
year increasing to 257 students in summer 20013;and
WHEREAS,because of her commitment to providing access for all children to the potential transformative
experiences of music,art,drama and nature,Ms.Mintz also has supported students'participation in classes
offered by the Richmond Arts Center,East Bay Center for the Performing Arts and Windmill Gymnastics.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of Contra Costa
County does hereby recognize and honor Youth Enrichment Strategies for its tireless work
enhancing the lives of youth and their families by exposing children to a wider world of
opportunities and therefore allowing them to imagine a better future for themselves.
PASSED by a unanimous vote of the Board of Supervisors members present this 10th day of December 2003.
