HomeMy WebLinkAboutMINUTES - 11122002 - C10-C15 l RESOLUTION HONORING MARY MCCOSKER RESOLUTION NO. 2002/log AS THE 2002 LAFAYETTE CITIZEN OF THE YEAR WHEREAS, Mary McCosker has served on the Lafayette School Board for 13 years, serving as President at different times over the years. Mary has served as the President of the Lafayette Nursery School twice and as the co-chair of the Contra Costa County Swim Meet for two years; and WHEREAS, Mary McCosker has acquired a lengthy list of volunteering opportunities throughout her years of residency in Lafayette. Mary is involved with the Lafayette Girl Scout Association, the Friends of the Lafayette Library Board, the Lafayette Historical Society Board, she has served as the school improvement Program Director for Happy Valley School, she serves as an instructor for 3rd grade Lafayette history and 5th grade American history; and WHEREAS, Mary McCosker has played an integral part in the writing and publishing of the book A Town Called Lafayette which is used in the local elementary schools in their curriculum during the study of local government. Mary McCosker has been a primary component of the process that continues to serve the children so well; and WHEREAS, Mary McCosker is an unselfish individual who provides enthusiasm and insight in her good work for the community. Among her many titles, her daughter has given her the title of"Jill of all Trades", however, that title wouldn't do justice for Mary's generous spirit; and WHEREAS,Mary McCosker and her husband Daryl continue to work for the betterment of the children and the community of Lafayette. Mary has served as a wonderful role model and mother to her three children, Katie, Megan and Will; and NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that we honor 061cex For her dedication to the City of Lafayette. By 0 '/ 2 Deputy Clerk Introduced by Supervisor Mark DeSaulnier,District IV In the Matter of i RESOLU"I'ION NO. 2002/717 RECOGNIZING WORLD AIDS DAY AND HONORING REV SHEILA COOK OF UNITY CHURCH OF RICHMOND FOR HER TIRELESS WORK.HELPING PEOPLE WITH HTVIAIDS IN WEST CONTRA COSTA COUNTY Whereas, worldwide, there are approximately 40 million people living with HIV/AIDS. 21.8 million have succumbed to AID51 deaths;and Whereas,in Contra Costa County,it is estimated about 4900 residents are infected with HIV;2248 people have been diagnosed with or have AIDS,and 1143 people have died from AIDS related deaths;and Whereas,the most common form,of transmission of HIV is unprotected sex and by sharing needles, 'Women, teenagers,young adults,and people of color(especially African-Americans)continue to be at highest risk of HTV infection;and Whereas,Rev.Sheila Cook urged her congregation at Unity Church of Richmond to reach out and offer services to people with HIV/AIDS in 1991;and Whereas,her unwavering compassion ultimately led to the creation in 1991of the Tranquilhum.Center,West Contra Costa County's est adult day center in Richmond,which offers,among other services,counseling,case management,massage therapy,'nutrition services,HIV/AIDS education classes,and Whereas, the tireless efforts of Rev. Sheila Cook and the Unity Church of Richmond have raised a higher awareness for compassion to those living with the HIV/AIDS;and Whereas,Can Sunday,December 1,2002,residents in West Contra Costa County will honor and remember those who have died to the epidemic in a Candlelight March from the Unity Church of Richmond to the Richmond Civic Center. They will be joined by countless others in the World for a day of remembrance. NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED,that the Board of Supervisors of Contra Costa County recognizes World AIDS Day and honors the visionary work of Rev.Sheila Cook and Unity Church of Richmond.
