El Cerrito Presented by Supervisor Gerber) Elisabeth Miller of Temple Beth Hillel was in the forefront of the creation of the Greater Richmond Interfaith Program's winter relief shelter program in 1993 and has been a dedicated volunteer ever since. Supporting the staff, spending many evenings and nights at the shelter, she has mentored numerous homeless families. She has prepared and served countless meals, taken sick children to the hospital in the middle of the night, and secured clothing and school supplies for shelter residents. When families move to their own housing, she finds donated furniture and necessities to help them set up their homes. Approximately 180 homeless families have benefited from her care and encouragement. John Medlock, Richmond(f�esente �d by Supervisor Gioia) John Medlock has volunteered with Opportunity West for three years. Working with families and schools in the SafeFutures prograni, he has interviewed and provided training jobs for homeless and gang-involved youth. With money for books,tutoring, and plenty of encouragement from John Medlock, Joe Thatsaphone, a youth in the program, has earned his high school diploma and begun attending Contra Costa College while working to support himself A public works professional who has worked with recreation and sports programs as well, John Medlock uses his talents to create a kind of wholistic wellness program with homeless and high-risk youth. He serves as a member of the West County Health Care District Board. Johnson-LEman architects.is. LaL_ a (Presented b Lafayette L _ VSupervisor Uilkema) Johnson Lyman Architects of Lafayette were responsible for the architectural design and contract document production for 16 homes on Ellis Street in Concord for Mt. Diablo Habitat for Humanity, all for very low-income families, and provided their services on a pro-bona basis. Dave Johnson, the principal-in-charge, donated well over 500 hours. Other staffof the firm contributed more than 1000 hours. The firm has provided assistance for completion of seven homes in Pittsburg and is helping with another 13 homes located on Herb White Way in Pittsburg. plans are in the making with the firm's help for Habitat developments in Oakley and Baypoint. Soroptimists have been contributing to the work of S l l TEP, INC. since the agency was created in 1986. They have fed hungry people, painted walls, famished apartments,provided funds for rental deposits, schooling, etc. Two apartments at the East County Family'Transitional Center will be re-furnished when the present families graduate into their own apartments. A Soroptirnist donation of$5,000 began the SHELTER., Inc.,revolving loan fund, which evolved into the agency's rental assistance program. The Contra Costa InterLaitb Coalition QLresented bE Syga r°y or t eSgulnier) The Contra Costa interfaith Coalition, now 10 years old and 19 church congregations and charity organizations strong,reports these totals for the last five years: 6,278 furniture pickups and deliveries to homeless families and individuals moving into Dousing; 20 drivers; and 14 working poor families provided with food. Froml994-2001 the Coalition.served 101,140 meals at three County shelters,which saved the County $297,035.
