HomeMy WebLinkAboutMINUTES - 10152002 - PR.2 In the Matter of Declaring RESOLUTION NO. 2002/621 "Red Ribbon Week Celebration" In Contra Costa County as Requested by The Alcohol and Other Drugs Advisory Board, the Partnership Forum for a Drug & Alcohol-Free Contra Costa & the Partners in Recovery Alliance WHEREAS, tobacco, alcohol and other drug use and abuse has reached pandemic stages in California and throughout the United States; and WHEREAS,it is imperative that community members launch unified and visible tobacco,alcohol and other drug prevention education programs and activities to eliminate the demand for these substances; and WHEREAS,the Partnership Forum Alliance, the Alcohol and Other Drugs Advisory Board,the Partners In Recovery Alliance, and the Sheriff Department coordinate Contra Costa County Red Ribbon Celebration in cooperation with communities to offer our citizens the opportunity to demonstrate their commitment to healthy, drug and alcohol-free lifestyles; and WHEREAS,the Red Ribbon Celebration acts as a catalyst to establish public and private partnerships for communities and neighborhoods to take action and develop an attitude of intolerance to substance abuse, and will observe across America during RED RIBBON WEEK,October 23—31,2002; and WHEREAS,Parents,Youth, Government,Sheriff Department, Business,Law Enforcement,Schools,Religious Institutions, Service Organizations,Health Services, Social Services, Media,and the General Public will demonstrate their commitment to drug and alcohol-free communities by wearing and displaying Red Ribbons during this week-long celebration; this year's theme "FREEDOM IS DRUG FREE-PLANT THE PROMISE!" reminds us of the men and women engaged in the fight against drugs to ensure that children and youth are given the opportunity to pursue their goals without limitations. Planting has always been a symbol of hope..Contra Costa County joins the"Plant the Promise" movement in conjunction with thousands of citizens in the United States who collectively take a stand for a drug-free America; and WHEREAS,Contra Costa County further commits resources to ensure the success of the Red Ribbon Celebration and year round tobacco,alcohol and other drug prevention efforts,focusing on demonstrating the destructive effects of drugs and the positive alternative choices that are available to our youth. NOW THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED,that the County Board of Supervisors does hereby support October 23rd—31't,2002 as RED RIBBON WEEK, and encourages all citizens to participate in tobacco, alcohol and other drug prevention programs and activities, making a visible statement and commitment to alcohol and drug-free communities in which to raise a generation of healthy children and youth; Be it-also resolved that the County Board of Supervisors encourages all community members to pledge: NO USE OF DRUGS,AND NO ILLEGAL USE OF LEGAL DRUGS.
