The Commission consists of 26 members. The Internal Operations Committee reviews nominations to the 20 At Large seats and their Alternate. Terms for all Commission seats are three years. On October 7, 2002, the IOC considered the Commission's nomination of four individuals to fill current vacancies. However, since two of the current vacancies have not been recognized by the Board of Supervisors and posted for ten days, the IOC is recommending approval of only two of the nominations at this time. The IOC has advised the Commission to have the remaining seats declared vacant so that the vacancies may be posted and new appointments made. Sigma .Xi -- an honorary research society. 1. How did you hear about the CCCW? I have followed events of the Commission by reading several articles in the Contra Costa Times. I also enjoyed perusing the CCCW website. 2. What experience, if any, do you have with county commissions? I do not have any experience with county commissions. However, I have worked on several committees at LTC. Davis for the Entomology Department. I have been especially active in the department's involvement in Picnic Day, an open day for the public to visit the campus and learn about research. I am an active officer for our graduate association and have initiated ways to raise funds for our graduate group, such as selling t-shirts and recently a donation of insect puppets. 3. Do you have any experience/skills in any of the following areas? — Law _- Government _ Community Services Accounting Health Graphic Arts X Education Fundraising —Public Relations Finance _X Computer Human Services X Other: Science Please give details as to your area of expertise. My primary expertise is as an educator of science. I have volunteered with the Adopt-a-Scientist Program at UC Davis by visiting schools to teach children about science. I chose to focus on plants and insects. I continue to host various school and other organized groups at the department. These groups range in age from kindergarten to 10th grade. As a student, I have a varied science background and in the process of working towards my advanced degrees have attained great communication skills, including working with power point presentations. I also have some knowledge of computers and website development. I work part-time for a non-profit where I have helped to increase the amount of information put on the site. 4. Do you serve on any Beard of Directors/Trustees? If so, which ones? _No Have you had any board orientation and/or training? No. However, I am very willing to learn about the dynamics of serving . on a board and have worked as part of a group and in team-based environments. 5. Are you involved in any other community organizations or activities? If so, which ones? In the Entomology department I have had the opportunity to have elementary school and cubscout groups visit to learn about the basics of entomology. I have been involved with an Expand Your Horizon symposium and also with the upward Bounds program during the summer, teaching young students about basic entomology and research. In addition, I volunteer in the Bay Area as part of the Mt. Diablo Hiking Assistance Unit where I provide assistance and reminders of the rules and regulations on the trails to hikers. I have also started working with a group of individuals restoring the area of Sausal Creek in Oakland.. We are monitoring the entomological fauna to determine impacts of the restoration process. 6. Why do you want to serve on the CCCW? I believe that I can add to CCCWs expertise and growing interest in working with young ladies. A few of my interests that might be appealing to CCCW are: 1) girls and science, 2) health, and 3) career issues. The area that I have the most expertise, as I mentioned above, is taping to girls and getting them: excited and involved in science and math. In addition, health, particularly exercise is an important focus in my life. I believe that healthy people often feel better about themselves. If CCCW is interested in making girls feel good about themselves, this is an important area. Girls that participate in sports often have a better self- image and higher self-esteem. Finally, I recently read an article about children and how their future goals and transition into work may depend on many of the experiences they had outside of the school. CCCW could participate by helping to transition young women into careers by providing talks or having biographies on the website about their career and what they need to do to get there. I am an extremely focused individual who works well in team environments. I also find it rewarding to participate in activities that make a difference. I have women mentors who gave me a strong sense of self and an appreciation of my ability to achieve. I believe the Commission serves both the purpose of initiating policies and changing social ideals for women. I would find it gratifying to be a part of the process. 7. V ' BRIEN September 27, 2002 The Honorable Federal D. Clover Supervisor-District V Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors 315 East Leland Road Pittsburg, California 94565 [sent electronically and via U.S. Mail] Dear Supervisor Clover: Thank-you for your letter of September 11, 2002. I believe it is important for you to have resident participation on the Bay Point Planning Area Committee that supports your vision for Bay Point. Therefore, with this letter, I am submitting my resignation from the Bay Point Planning Area Committee, effective immediately. This resignation will also allow me the additional time needed to concentrate on my role as Vice-Chairman of the recently reconstituted Landmarks Advisory Committee to the Board of Supervisors. Additionally, as a member of the Bay Point Planning Area Committee, I want you to know that I was shocked to learn that applicants and effected neighbors are NOT routinely notified directly of the PAC's consideration of applications for variances. I was also disturbed by the number of applications that came before this body in which the work requested by the variance submittals had already been completed. Sincerely, Raymond J.
