14'HEREAS,Jayne Christine Faria was born in 1952,in Berkeley,CA.At 1 year old she was voted"Miss
Berkeley of 2952",which began her public and volunteer life.Jayne was active at Albany High School
where she played in the band,became a cheerleader and participated in school clubs. During High
School Jayne did volunteer work for the Humane Society and worked with disabled children.She
received a scholarship and went on to complete her education by receiving a degree in Sociology from
the University of Berkeley.
WHEREAS,Jayne became a train operator for the Bay Area rapid Transit District(BART)on October
14, 1974,becoming an active member of her union,Amalgamated Transit Union(ATU),Local 1555.
Jayne has served as steward,chief steward,and chief advocate handling arbitration panels,past vice
president,past president and serves on various committees.In 1993 Jayne was the first woman to be
elected president of Local 2555.Jayne is called a"secret weapon"by her union piers at BART for her
"win"rate on arbitrations.
WHEREAS,In 1993 Jayne was elected to the Contra Costa Central Labor Council Executive Board and
has served as an executive board member,trustee and served on several committees.As the chair of the
events committee Jayne has organized and planned our annual fund-raiser and the Carolyn Robinson
Scholarship Luncheon.Jayne has devoted thousands of hours volunteering on the labor program for
Labor Endorsed Candidates. In addition to her Labor activities,Jayne serves as the secretary to the 11th
Assembly District Committee,volunteer's time to the Contra Costa Democratic Central Committee and
is a member of the Contra Costa County Commission on the Status of Women.
NOW,THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED,that the Contra Costa Board of Supervisors
Commends Jayne Christine Faria for becoming Activist of the Year and her outstanding service to the
County.
PASSED by a unanimous vote of the Board of Supervisors members present this 1st day of October
2002.
