BACKGROUND: Proposition 42 was placed on the March ballot by a near unanimous vote of both houses of the State Legislature. If approved by the voters, it will permanently dedicate the state sales tax on gasoline for transportation. It also will continue the current distribution formula with 40 percent of the gasoline sales tax collected going to the State Transportation,Improvement Program, 20percentto counties, 20 percent to cities and 20 percent to public transit. It is estimated that Contra Costa County's share of the tax will be more than $9 million next year. Cities in the County will receive more than $10 million and the County's share of regional funding flowing through:the State Transportation Improvement Program will be more than$33 million. Preposition 42 is supported by the California State Association of Counties,the League of California Cities, the Contra Costa Transportation Authority'and hundreds of local government, business, labor and other organizations throughout the stater Proposition 42 will provide vital resources to improve'our deteriorating transportation system. It will provide a stable, ongoing source of funding and make it possible to better plan for future transportation needs. By speeding up such critical'projects as the new bore for the Caldecott'T'unnel, additional jobs will be created with a positive'effect-.on the County and State's economy.
