RECOMMENDATION:
Adopt a position in support of Proposition 42 on the March 5, 2002 primary election ballot.

gasoline for transportation. It also will continue the current distribution formula with 40 percent
of the gasoline sales tax collected going to the State Transportation,Improvement Program,
20percentto counties, 20 percent to cities and 20 percent to public transit.
It is estimated that Contra Costa County's share of the tax will be more than $9 million next year.
Cities in the County will receive more than $10 million and the County's share of regional funding
flowing through:the State Transportation Improvement Program will be more than$33 million.

provide vital resources to improve'our deteriorating transportation system. It will provide a
stable, ongoing source of funding and make it possible to better plan for future transportation
needs. By speeding up such critical'projects as the new bore for the Caldecott'T'unnel, additional
jobs will be created with a positive'effect-.on the County and State's economy.
