Hunt, Walden District Improvement Association, 2632 Cherry Lane, Walnut Creek, regarding participation in the approval of Pleasant Hill Bart design charette plans. THIS IS A MATTER FOR RECORD PURPOSES ONLY NO BOARD ACTION WAS TAKEN . Walden District Improvement Association �' v 2632 Cherry Lane 925.930.8381 Walnut Creek, CA 94596 khunt12 a@hotmail.com October 16, 2001 Chair Uilkema and Members of the Board of Supervisors 651 Pine Street , Room 108A Martinez, CA 94553 Chair Uilkema and Members of the Board: The Walden District Improvement Association has the privilege of presenting the Board with the attached petition that states "We, the undersigned, would like an opportunity to vote on Pleasant Hill BART Charrette Plans and any changes to these plans." This petition was conceived and carried out virtually single-handedly by one of our members, Mary Phelps. She then brought the petition to the Walden Board and asked for our support, which was unanimously given. The 496 people who signed this petition undoubtedly did so for a variety of reasons. No matter why they signed, they clearly felt that the charrette process was note complete. Ms. Phelps' primary motivation was her feeling that long-term planning for the area as a transit location was being ignored. Walden shares her concern. One of the charrette planners estimated that the proposed office square footage would only generate 240 new BART riders. More BART riders would result from construction of the proposed minimum of 255 housing units because people who choose to live near a BART station ride BART. There has been a great deal of talk about Smart Growth. Density alone does not constitute Smart Growth. It needs to be the right kind of density. The land at Pleasant Hill BART, with its valuable transit-orientation, deserves the best possible use.
